just like the safari browser, i have fat finger and typing with both thumbs is hard on the skinny little keyboard. Is there anything to turn the text message keyboard sideways????

No there is not. But I think that there should be an option to turn the whole UI into landscape. Like in setting you could choose landscape or portrait.

U can type sideways, go to installers, download bitesms, keep your SMS carrier if u have a good plan, start to type a text, then turn Ur phone sideways, there u go for the fat finger people!!!!!! Ur welcome in advance.

there are plenty of 3rd party apps that will let you do this for SMS and Mail. I agree the whole UI should be in landscape not just one or two apps. I have a feeling apple is working on it. Almost all the current touchscreen phones with accelerometers can do this so why cant the iphone? it's def capable.

Agreed, but that's also the case with MMS and copy and paste support, both of which are common features on most if not all smart phones, and neither of which Apple has considered apparently.

In iphone version 3.0, most of the native programs (like SMS, email, notes, etc) will be able to turn and type in landscape as well as copy and paste
