Default NetServices.app - control all your services
    Announcing......NetServices!

Version 0.1.2 Update Available - Please update previous versions

NetServices is an adaptation of Chris Hoffman's Services.app that adds the ability to control an assortment of additional Network & Computer Sharing services.

TESTED ON iPHONE FIRMWARE 1.1.1 ONLY
    (Please See Version History Below)

Included in Ver 0.1.2 is control for:
    • Phone
    • Edge
    • Wifi
    • Bluetooth
    • openSSH
    • DropBear SSH
    • Apache Web Server
    • Lighttpd Web Server
    • Firefly Media Server
    • AFP File Sharing
    • Samba File Sharing
    • Socks Proxy Server
    • Tinyproxy

    - Current iPhone IP Address is also displayed.

    - Relevant controls only appear if the corresponding service exists on iPhone.

    - A customizable settings file is included to allow users to adjust button labels and personalize NetServices.

It is important to note that NetServices does NOT install any of these extended services. NetServices simply provides a simple Graphical User Interface to turn them on & off.

Any questions regarding installing or maintainence of extended Newtork Services should be directed to the companies providing that specific software.

Any questions regarding NetServices or suggestions of ways to extend NetServices capabilities including additional services to add - please contact Greg Hartstein at [email protected]

Original Source Code and Concept by Chris Hoffman
Additional Source Code provided by Peter Iannucci
Graphics Concept inspired by Marcio Almeida's iToggle

An enormous debt of gratitude is extended to the brilliant developers at iPhone-Dev IRC for their tutelage, ideas, and never-ending patience.

You can get a copy of NetServices two different ways:

    1) Download directly from http://homepage.mac.com/hartsteins/copycoders/zips/NetServices-0.1.2.zip
    • Unzip resulting download if not unzipped already.
    • Place NetServices.app directly into Applications folder on iPhone via SSH or file transfer system of your choice.

    2) Add CopyCoders to your installer sources and NetServices will become available under Utilities.
    • Open Installer
    • Tap Sources along bottom navigation bar
    • Tap Edit along top navigation bar
    • Tap Add along top navigation bar
    • Enter: http://homepage.mac.com/hartsteins/copycoders/copycoders.xml
    • Tap OK
    • Once Installer finishes adding source - Tap Done
    • CopyCoders should now appear as a source in "Other Sources". If it does not -Tap Refresh.
    • Tap Install along bottom navigation bar
    • NetServices will now be available for installation under the "Utilities" heading.

    SEE ATTACHED SCREENSHOT
Please Note: Many more service are available than shown, but only those installed on iPhone will appear.

    Please visit http://homepage.mac.com/hartsteins/copycoders/index.html

    VERSION HISTORY

    0.1.1 - Initial Release
    • Users reported issues with SSH not shutting down correctly
    • User reported problems with phone service
    • Tinyproxy service was not appearing after installation

    0.1.2 - Update 11/23/07
    • SSH launching issues have been resolved
    • Phone service problem has yet to be replicated but now no longer follows On/Off state through restart. Should toggling phone service present a problem, simply restart iPhone to restore service.
    • Additional search locations have been added for Tinyproxy's Launch Daemons in an effort to anticipate installation variations.
    • NEW - Switch Visibility - Keys have been added to the settings file (inside NetServices.app folder) to set visibility of any switches. This is handy for services that are installed but rarely turned on or off.

Thank you for your ideas and help in making NetServices better.

Hi I installed NetServices.app and it works fine!! BUT.... I installed the AFP file sharing to the phone and I am using it But it does not give the the option in the app to turn it off or on!!! The AFP Service doesn't show as an option!!! I installed Netservice for that reason especially!! Any Help!!

    Kanekero -

How as AFP installed? Did you use Installer.app or do it by hand?

With so many ways to install the same services it has been a challenge to try and anticipate them all. I will be adding links to all the assorted network services to my Installer source with preferred methods of installation soon.

i just installed NetServices on my ipod touch fw 1.1.1

    ssh/afp/lighttpd starts and stops fine.

but samba i cant neither start nor stop. the script

    /Applications/NetServices.app/LaunchFiles/samba.sh start

    and

    /Applications/NetServices.app/LaunchFiles/samba.sh stop

works well, but it will not work when i move the slider.

    Stefan,

Check permissions on the samba scripts.

the script itself has 755 (like afp.sh and ssh.sh)

the samba bins (nmbd and smbd) are 755 too.

like i wrote, from shell i can start and stop samba with the script provided in your app, only slider will not work.

    edit:

    i just found the solution....

    # pwd
    /Applications/NetServices.app/LaunchFiles
    # mv samba.sh smb.sh

the script you provide in the folder seems to have wrong name.
after renaming to smb.sh it works well!

    sliding to position "on"

    # cat /usr/local/samba/var/locks/nmbd.pid
    1258
    # ps -aux|grep 1258
    root 1263 6.0 0.0 273028 408 p0 S+ 5:27AM 0:00.02 grep 1258
    root 1258 0.0 0.0 283472 668 ?? Ss 5:26AM 0:00.04 /usr/local/samba/nmbd -D

    sliding to position "off"

    # ps -aux|grep 1258
    root 1268 0.0 0.0 274156 0 p0 R 5:27AM 0:00.00 grep 1258

you shoul either change call of the script from app, or name of the script in zip

    regards, stefan

    Stefan,

Writing you with the same info as you posted.

Thanks for the bug find. It will be fixed in the next update - very soon.

For those having trouble with Samba - quick fix:

    Open NetServices.app folder
    Open LaunchFiles folder
    Rename samba.sh to smb.sh

Thanks for helping to make NetServices better.

Love the app. It is not properly showing my sshd installation, the rest seem to be working fine. Keep up the good work!

    Hey guys,

I've got a problem where the Samba File Sharing doesn't seem to hold the state after I've closed and re-opened the NetServices app - does anybody else experience this?

If I start Samba, and then close NetServices and re-open it, the Samba tab is in the Off position even though it's still running in the background.

    Any suggestions/quick fixes?

EDIT: Also, I've tried removing the locking files manually such as:
    # pwd
    /usr/local/samba/var/locks
    # rm smbd.pid
    # rm nmbd.pid

    It didn't help though

Also, once I've started Samba File Sharing through NetServices, nmdb doesn't seem to be running in a ps -A output. Is this normal?

The process ID that is stored in nmdb.pid has a number but when I look through ps -A it doesn't look like it's still running; so it appears that nmbd starts and then stops from a wild guess. Would this effect NetServices holding the correct state? Apart from holding the right state, samba seems to function correctly.
