I'm not sure if you're aware but there already is a pretty impressive 2d physics engine available. I don't know how it compares to Phun as I'm not familiar with that program but give it a try, it may be similar enough for what you're interested in.

iphysics doesnt have features for water/motors/springs/hinges tho.
