Default stuck on iphone 3gs jailbreak/unlock
    Hi guys,

I'm jail-breaking/ unlocking my friends iphone and I'm stuck. I tried doing it a month ago and I believe the iphone firmware was 6.01, but when I power the iphone up I get the (connect to iTunes image with the usb). Whats the latest firmware I can upgrade to successfully unlock it as he will be using his iphone on tmobile. Please help as I'm stuck and have no idea how to unlock his iphone.

The firmware is not responsible for the unlock capability, it is the "baseband".

To attempt to kick your phone out of recovery mode, i.e. the itunes image with USB, hold the power + home button until the phone turns completely off, then power it on again.

If it is still stuck in recovery mode, download a program called tinyumbrella and select the "Exit Recovery" button.

Once its out of recovery mode, check what "modem firmware" the phone is on via the Settings app, and we can tell you if it is unlockable.

Your first steps should be finding out what bootrom 3GS you have (use iDetector) and what SHSH you have for it (tiny umbrella, click advanced, select box that says request shsh from cydia then press save SHSH.

My iphone 3gs contains the new bootrom and for the shsh it will not save it as it is still in recovery mode.

You can manually put in your ecid in tiny umbrella and check what shsh you have. If you don't know how to find your ecid just google "how find ecid iPhone".

That says iPhone 3G there. You said you had a 3GS. Which is it?
Easiest way to tell is look at back, iPhone 3G has grey writing where it says iPhone. 3GS has bright silver writing.

When you manually entered the ecid into tiny umbrella you probably didn't pick 3GS. You have to tell it what device you have when adding it manually.

Looks right, not really better though. That tells you what firmware you can go to. You can unlock and jailbreak just fine on 4.1, but its an old firmware. 6.1.3 only has a tethered jailbreak. You can also use iFaith to extract whatever shsh are currently on the device, you may get lucky with that.

Also do you know who the phone is originally locked to?

Can I upgrade to a newer firmware that does not have a tethered jailbreak? It for my friend so I dont think he knows how to turn the phone back on if its tethered and you restart it. and This is my friends phone that I am jailbreaking/unlocking for.

And do you think It might be better to upgrade he iphone to the latest firmware and buy the unlock sim card?

I gave you your options in my previous post. Use iFaith to extract your SHSH from the device to see if it helps your options. Also find out what carrier the phone is locked to.

You shouldn't have tried to restore yet. I just said to check with ifaith to see what shsh it could extract from the device itself. It will extract the shsh for whatever firmware the device is currently on. So if it was on 6.1 when this recovery stuff happened it would save 6.1 shsh for example.

Then I think I was wrong as I got 6.1.3 shah from ifaith. What should be my next step? Download that firmware and restore the iPhone?
