Iphone 3GS upgrading questions
Hey I have an iphone 3gs on FW: 4.2.1 and I wish to upgrade it to 5.1 or the latest one. My question is if I back it up on itunes and then restore it and use that backup will everything be back in it? Like the contacts, notes etc.? My baseband is 06.15.00 and I want to preserve it aswell. If anyone could help me I'd appreciate it.

You can go to 5.1.1 download the ipsw and make ya a custom firmware. With snowbreeze open up iTunes make sure it's updated to the latest version and then backup ya phone when all of that is done. Put ya phone into dfu mode and shift restore in iTunes and point it to the custom firmware ya made with snowbreeze.

Redsn0w can do this as well.
Select the Redsn0w.exe and then in the bar click: Run as Administrator. From there, go to the Extras tab and select the Custom IPSW option. From there select your IPSW that you downloaded and let it do it's thing.

How did it turn out?

it turned out pretty good I'm happy with ios 5. I'm assuming it got hacktivated right? How would I fix the push notifications and the battery life??

Argh sadly, there is no way to fix the push notifications bud, sorry. That's the only downside to hacktivating. As far as battery life, just be sure to not be running too many tweaks and stuff on it. They can hog up your battery a bit. But the 3GS isn't as conservative with battery. In my opinion, it shouldn't even get iOS updates anymore.

Just deactivate it in redsn0w and then reactivate it with the SIM.
