Stuck trying to downgrade

I bought a 3gs from a friend who did the complete data wipe before giving me the phone so its in DFU mode. My goal was to get this new phone to 4.3.3 but I'm new to this so I wasn't aware you needed SHSH file to do a downgrade. When connected to Itunes it says it must update it to the latest version. I tried TinyUmbrella to get it out of DFU but it didn't work. At this point I don't even know what version its currently on.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

Why bother with ios 4, we have ios 5 untethered..... Unless u really want to stay ios 4 than u can go to 4.1 apple still sign that version.

Update to 5.0.1 itunes should help u fix DFU.
