Upgrading iphone 3gs 3.1.3 to iOs 4 or later
Hello all,
My iphone 3GS is running on 3.1.3 (7E18) with firmware 5.12.01. I managed to jailbreak and unlocked it previously using jailbreakme and ultrasn0w. Right now, I would like to upgrade to iOS 4 (4.1, 4.2) to add some apps requiring iOS 4 or later, but I can't find a reliable source/step-by-step guide as to which program to use or if I can even do it without bricking my phone. Also, do I need to follow the same steps in jailbreaking and unlocking after I upgraded it to iOs 4?
Your help will be much appreciated.
A million thanks.

You can only upgrade it to 5.0.1, the latest stable version. iOS 4 was a while ago. Unless you have the SHSH blobs of those, you can't restore to those firmware. There is a reliable, trusted link here

I would suspect similar steps to unlocking and jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS.

Yeah if u JB before n did it right on 3.1.3 way back when it was first out, I would think in Cydia u would see shsh blobs saved on the first Cydia screen at the top...check that n see what it shows n let us know..4.2.1 was best on 3GS!! If u have blobs for that, I would go there!..I don't unlock so don't know much there but I'm pretty sure u cam create custom IPSW and preserve baseband of tour 5.12.01 or whatever u have..this is a must! Let us know what blobs u have

xboxbml is correct, we need to find out what SHSH blobs you have in order to find out if you can upgrade to iOS 4 (4.1 or 4.2). To do that (as xboxbml said earlier), open Cydia, and look at the top part of the screen. This is where Cydia lets you know if you have SHSH blobs stored in their database. If you see 4.1 or 4.2, then you are in luck.

thanks for all the replies. My Cydia displays SHSH: iOs 4.1, 5.01. By the way, I found this tutorial on youtube on how to update/upgrade my iPhone 3gS to Custom iOS 4.2.1 without losing my Baseband (5.12.01). But as with the many tutorials I've read and watched, I'm not exactly sure if this is the way to go and can resolve my issue. Will wait for your advice. Thanks again indeed

Yeah that sucks...u can only go to either 4.1 or the lateSt of 5.0.1....too bad...u should have also been saving locally with TinyUmbrella...u can download latest TU-connect phone n run that, highlight phone on left side click on save shsh on right side, then go to advanced tab-make sure only save shsh and request shsh from Cydia-and when connecting a device is checked, go back to general tab n click save shsh again and see what u get...my guess is u will only get 4.1 and 5.0.1 but u might get lucky..let us know..
Unfortunately I think cuz Cydia so hammered the last year or so, and depending on when u JB it, u only got those 2...Cydia hasn't been saving blobs for many for a while...Last edited by xboxbml; 01-03-2012 at 05:29 AM.

Well...like I said before...Cydia hasn't been saving blobs for some over the last year or so, so you should have been doing it locally after each new FW version came out, with TinyUmbrella, or actually going to each version, and using iFaith to dump blobs off the phone and create signed custom IPSW FW file with iFaith for that version with those dumped blobs...that's what I've been doing...I have iFaith signed IPSW for 4.2.1, 4.3.3, 5.0.1. If u have blobs saved locally, u might be able to still create custom signed IPSW with iFaith for that version..u said u wanted 5.0.1....if u don't have blobs for it, u can't go to it...u would be forced to current version which is 5.1...no untethered there yet...
