trying to Update the Jailbroken Iphone through Itunes

Hi guys, I really really need a help here..
I got this Iphone 2 days ago, then without knowing the circumstances I tried to update my Iphone which was already jailbroken and unlocked, cuz of my stupid action the Iphone has gone to recovery mode, you may easily say that I need to hold the home and power buttons certain seconds then do other stuff, but I can assure you none of these did not work for me
I have 32 Gb 3GS Iphone,
and it seems like it's stuck in recovery mode, I went to a guy today to fix that up, but he told me that the apple update server is down, and there won't be any help for me but waiting for the system to come back, I am not sure if he was lying or not but I had to believe him, anyway,
I need some advices about what I can do with this thing,
this is really annoying,
I paid couple hundred bucks and messed it up right away,

Please give me some information about what could've happened to the phone or what could help that out to get the system back to the normal mode

Did you try simply pressing the restore button when it pops up in iTunes?

+1, unless it has the iPad baseband then that would require extensive work.

Yes I did try, shift+Restore and select the 4,1, something version of firmware, it started to extract some files then it said that the iphone would be rebooted and it did, then a bar showed up on the screen, but no loading on it at all, then it rebooted again, then an error popped up on Itunes saying 1611 or something, then the tinyumbrealla thing was tried, It did not help either,
god this is freaking complicated, I feel like I can restore every phone and jailbreak them by now, except mine., I wached tons of videos and read soo many documents instead of doing my own school stuff..I feel pretty stupid doing so

What computer do you use? If you have a Mac, make a custom FW using pwnage tool and try to restore to that.

Try JUST clicking restore. It will update you to the latest FW and restore you clean. 4.1 will only work if you have shsh blobs saved.

You need SHSHs for 4.1. 4.2.1 is what you wanna try. Custom fw like moon#pie said.

Don't forget to set into pwned DFU mode first with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 before restoring. That's likely the reason for error 16xx.

I have a PC, but my roomie has a MAC, I may use his, but since I don't know how to customize my own custom Fw, I am not sure if I can do that, I went to a guy who said he could help me with getting paid, I said yeah sure, but he could not help me at all..
he said the apple update server was down,till it gets back to normal, he wouldn't help me, but I didn't leave my phone with him.

You can create a custom 4.2.1 on PC with sn0wbreeze 2.2

Yeah, sounds like you have an iPad baseband on your phone. Did the seller mention this? Ask your room mate to let you use his computer to make the custom FW. Google for the latest pwnage tool download and here is where you an downlpad 4.1.2 for your 3GS. iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

first off, Thanks for all the recommendations, I also wanna know whethere there would be a possibility that could lock my Iphone forever? or any chance that I may no longer use the iphone?

Also, would you all please list up all the basic steps to solve this issue in an order with detailed format?

I finally got to the right path, and did both jailbreak and unlock my Iphone finally with spending numerous hours, well I finally realized the problem was related to my stupid PC, last night I worked with the MAC, and everything did go through smoothly,
first off, I did restore with 4.1 then jailbreak it with redsn0w, then with the cydia thing I unlocked it, I did not know it was this easy..
well I learned a lot though,
thanks for giving me a hope to figure this out guys.. I guess If I paid for this, it was gonna be pretty stupid since I'd already spent so many hours on this..

Hi everyone, I'm having a similar problem with my iPhone 4. It is stuck in recovery mode, and have done everything I can to try to get it to reboot or restore with iTunes. It is not restoring in iTunes saying that it can't connect to the server, and won't do anything to help in redsn0w. Using a mac and a verizon iPhone 4, can anyone help? I've followed some tips earlier in this thread and am still having problems.
