Default Iphone 3G would like to break out of jail

I have an Iphone 3g and I have been searching for the past 2 days on info on how to jailbreak it properly. However every time I get somewhere I end up with a question that I can not find an answer to. Like what is the right version of redsnow to use? whats the newest version? whats ih8snow? greenpoison? pwnagetool? WHATHASHISAHDSIDHAISDH?!?!?!?!

Then I get scared and run away.
I have watched videos on pootube and still am lost.

    ok here we go!

I have an Iphone 3g (old bootrom) with itunes 10.1.2.17 and firmware 4.2.1
    - Running Windows 7 64bit

I would like to rollback to 3.1.3 firmware and also jailbreak it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also need to know if I can keep my contacts and photos?

    Download the 3.1.3 firmware.
Shift restore to it in itunes.
When you get error 1015 use tiny umbrella to exit recovery.
Then you can use jailbreakme.com or redsnow 0.9.4 to jailbreak. If you use redsnow to jailbreak you will also need a copy of the 3.1.2 firmware to point redsnow to for it to jailbreak 3.1.3.

sorry for being a complete retard...

What and when do I use tiny umbrella?

and "you will also need a copy of the 3.1.2 firmware to point redsnow to for it to jailbreak 3.1.3"
I have no idea what that would entail. Why would I need 3.1.2?

and will i lose my contacts and photos?

You use tiny umbrella after you get the 1015 error in itunes. You only need tiny umbrella to exit recovery. The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella

That is just how redsnow 0.9.4 works, it wont recognize a 3.1.3 firmware so you have to give it a 3.1.2 firmware. It will still jailbreak 3.1.3 fine doing this.

Yes, you will lose your contacts and photos so I suggest sync those to itunes first so that you can sync them back after.

    sorry, just to be clear.

I shift restore itunes to 3.1.3 but use the 3.1.2 firmware with redsnow?
It will jailbreak the 3.1.3 and leave it as 3.1.3?

    I also have a baseband 05.15.04
    and bootloader 5.9
    Will that effect anything?

would you recommend jailbreakme.com or redsnow?

Sorry for being such a bum hole but if itunes has synced my contacts and such, will it move them back over if i downgrade the firmware?

Should I be putting the iphone in dfu mode first? and if so, how would i do that?

Yes, it will leave it at 3.1.3.

    Your baseband won't affect anything.

If you are on official carrier I would suggest jailbreakme.com, much easier to use.

As long as you sync your contacts to something like outlook/windows contacts/adress book then you can sync them back after, regardless of what firmware you are on. Same with photos. You wont be able to sync back app data like game saves though.
