My sister bought this unlocked 3Gs iphone from craiglist. it was fully functional when she tested it, she tried to turned the iphone back, after she got back home, it went to recovery mode loop. Now she wants me to fix it, I have tried a lot of method in the forum yet I cannot solve this problem.
Okay, here is the condition I am experiencing:
1. no SHSH file on the iphone.
2. Cannot kick the phone out from the recovery mode.
3. Do not know what is the baseband of the iphone.
4. Do not know how did seller of this iphone unlocked the phone.
5. Do not know what is firmware version of the iphone used.
6. Cannot access the cydia on the iphone because it's on a recovery mode and i cannot kick out from the recovery mode.
7. Cannot update the phone, error 1015
8. Cannot downgrade the phone, got error that said this phone is incompatible.
9. iTunes is at the newest version, version 10.1.2
10. I have tried redsn0w, pawnage, greenpois0n, and other methods on this forum.
Please help me solved this problem.
Thank you.

Tried Redsnow but I couldnt put it into dfu mode, holding the button sequences it was showing had no effect and I get an error message saying 'you are running in recovery mode and have failed to enter dfu mode...' The iphone only seems to come on when connected to the computer and it comes up with an apple sign followed by the USB-ITunes connect screen. Don't think I've tried iReb so will give it a go. Thanks.

There is a trick to turn your iphone off and tether boot or dfu it when you are at apple logo, running redsn0w. When you start the next to start the 3 Secs counts, move the cursor to about 2 inches away.
Now at frozen apple screen, hold both button until the apple logo goes off, immediately let go the Home button but keep holding the Power button.
Now using the other hand move the cursor to the Next button and tap on it.
Then proceed the next 10 secs count, when it counts down from 10 to 4 secs, you sceen logo will dissapear.
This is the right timing until DFU or tether boot is achieved.
Practice, practice makes perfect.Last edited by iYeow; 02-11-2011 at 11:42 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Trouble kicking out of recovery mode
I tried this with a 3G with jailbroken 4.2.1 (not unlocked), which is stuck in recovery mode (error 1015 and others). I kicked it with iREB and then tried to restore to a custom 4.2.1, same one I used for the jailbreak. Got error 20000 straight from the green screen, before the phone even go to the Apple screen with loading bar. The phone stayed in green screen. Then I tried restoring to a custom 4.1, got error 1015 after the Apple screen had loaded as usual, and the phone went back to recovery "plug me into iTunes" mode. One thing I notice is that iTunes says it has "detected an iPhone in recovery mode" even when the phone has the iREB green screen, which I thought meant it was kicked out of recovery and in DFU or some other pwnd state. Any thoughts? Also, has anyone got a clue why this seems to have worked with a 3.x firmware but not with the 4.x ones? Any help much appreciated!

Have you tried using the new snowbreeze 2.2?

I am having all the same issues. I notice everyone's answers are the same answers I keep getting on google, youtube, and other forums. These answers include to use, redsnow, ireb, snowbreeze... etc! I can't get any single one of these programs to run. Everytime I click on them they just give me error messages. I got greenpoison to run, but it won't do anything to my phone.

Hi AlbertSkyKing, I'm not sure exactly what your situation is, but I can tell you mine, which was just solved by two moderators on another thread of this forum. I had jailbroken my phone with redsn0w, using the 4.2.1 firmware, and had installed the iPad baseband. When my phone froze and I tried these various means to restore it, I forgot that when you install iPad baseband (aka
Hi AlbertSkyKing. I just solved my problem, but need to know more about yours. It sounds like you're not very familiar with jailbreaking? Is that right? Because all the programs mentioned on these threads are JB programs, and if you're having these restore errors with a non-jailbroken phone, you might have other options, or you might need to spend a lot of time learning about jailbreaking. Let me know more about your situation. It's quite possible that with more info, users or more likely moderators on this forum will eventually be able to help you. OK? Good luck!
In reply to others on this thread, I think my story may be helpful to those of you with unlocked phones and 1015 errors. The solution mentioned, going into DFU and restoring to custom firmware, worked for me, but only after I realized a key piece of the puzzle: I had the iPad baseband on my phone and it was what was causing restore errors. A lot of unlocks are done with the iPad baseband, so if you're not sure (like the person who bought off craigslist), this might be worth a try. So, I had jailbroken my phone with redsn0w, using the 4.2.1 firmware, and had installed the iPad baseband. When my phone froze and I tried these various means to restore it, I forgot that when you install iPad baseband (aka 6.15) redsn0w warns you that you'll be unable to restore to standard firmware of any kind. Now, I thought I was restoring to custom firmware because I was pointing iTunes to the downloaded FW I'd used with redsn0w. But some moderators on this forum pointed out to me that redsn0w does not create custom firmware the way sn0wbreeze/pwnagetool does. So actually I was trying to restore to standard FW (custom FWs, if you were ignorgant like me, identify themselves rather blatantly with the words "custom" or "snowbreeze" etc in their file names). So, I downloaded the latest sn0wbreeze and made a CFW WITHOUT the iPad baseband (instructions easy to find online). I entered DFU mode using redsn0w (pointing it to my old standard firmware - it doesn't like CFWs - and then selecting "just enter pwnd DFU mode right now). Once in DFU, I opened iTunes, held Shift, clicked restore, pointed into my CFW, and it worked! Hope this helps!Last edited by fourth; 02-19-2011 at 07:05 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

All I know about my phone is that it is a 32gb 3gs, and I don't know what baseband it has ( I don't even know what that is exactly). I am running xp on virtualbox (on a linux ubuntu 10.10 system). Not sure the OS has anything to do with it, but I have tried restoring the phone with a Mac, and 2 other pc's, one with Windows 7 and another with Windows Vista.
Right now, I am stuck on error 1604
I mean, is there a way that I can just clean the whole thing out? I don't even know what to try anymore, I have been giving this about 4 hours or so a day for almost 2 weeks!

Since it's a used iPhone, and previously unlocked, most likely it's on iOS 4.2.1 with baseband 6.15.00.
I had similar issues but have done a fix for this. Hope it works for you:
Restore 3GS Custom IPSW: Error 28, 1600 or Stuck in DFU Mode Fix | BeijingiPhoneRepair.com
Note: Sn0wbreeze 2.2 is a great tool, try with different firmware, one of them may work for you.

Thanks for the replies all. I solved my problem with a CFW of 4.2.1 I made with sn0wbreeze, without the iPad BB. Put it in DFU with redsn0w first.
