Downgrading from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1

when you mean activate and jailbreak what do you mean by activate?

so the exact same thing will happen through jailbreakme and limera1n? they are just two different ways of jailbreaking the iphone?
am i correct?

If you don't have the official sim, then after the restore you will be at Emergency screen. Limera1n can jailbreak at emegency screen.
If your iphone is already at Home Screen, that is fine. Just use Limera1n to jailbreak and then use Ultrasn0w to unlock from Cydia at 4.0.2

wow you just confused me!

firstly thanks for your help so far.

secondly, i have the iphone 3gs and have been using it normally, it is open to all sims. the current software is 4.0.2/

and now i want to jailbreak it. and as jailbreakme does not jailbreak the 4.0.2 software, all i do is download limera1n correct?

but what is this ultrasn0w thing?

Oh!, you mean you have factory unlock ?
Then you don't need ultrasn0w.

If you have factory unlock, then you can restore to 4.1 and use Limera1n to jailbreak at 4.1

ahh very confused now dude.

if by factory unlock you mean that i got the iphone and can now put any sim card in then yes it is factory unlocked.

so how do i restore to 4.1?
shoudl i not just use limera1n and jailbreak the 4.0.2 version like previously stated?

Factory unlock means once restored to official firmware, you do not need to unlock, you can put in any sim.
Restoring to 4.1 by hitting restore in itunes, make sure you have the latest Itunes.
If you are sure you have the factory unlcck, then go for 4.1.

If you want to restore to 4.1, once restored, put in your sim card to activate first before going with limera1n jailbreak.

thanks for your help i will do so when i have enough time later today and let you know.

so if i understood correctly you only need to 'downgrade' if your iphone is not facctory unlocked as if you restor to your 4.1 you wont be able to put your sim card in correct?

also what happends when i restore? what happends to all my current apps? does the iphone work slower as i have restored it to an old update? when i restore i will have an old version so is that not a disadvantage?

No again, people who downgrade is because they are at a firmware when there is no jailbreak. It has nothing to do with unlock.
The baseband is for your carrier provider, it can go up bur cannot go down.
Since now all idevice can be jailbroken by the current jailbreak tools, there is no need to downgrade.

hey,
found out my iphone is factory unlocked.

so i downloaded the limera1n which was successful.
however one i can not see the limera1n icon

and also when i download cydia there is an error message, which is something like this:

error downloading cydia
error:error
code 3006
operation couldn't be completed
.....

do you know what i am talking about?
can you help me out?

Do a couple of reboots, if it still doesn't work, you might want to try GreenPoison RC4 to jailbreak.

Why would you want to downgrade? Besides, you can make any downgrade that makes sense if you want.
