How do I upgrade 3GS from 3.1.3 to 4.1?
I first jailbroke my iPhone 3GS whilst on firmware 3.1.2 around January this year. A few months later, I accidentally caused it to endlessly crash on the Apple logo. I restored/upgraded it to 3.1.3 (shift+click) and then jailbroke again using Spirit.
This was in May (the 19th to be specific). I'm still running the same jailbroken 3.1.3, and have synced and backed up my iPhone plenty of times since iOS4's release.
So my question is this... Is it possible for me to upgrade my firmware to 4.1 and jailbreak it now limerain/greenpois0n are released? And if so, how do I go about doing it?
I know this has probably been asked (and answered) at least 100 times, but its tricky finding a solid answer, what with the new tools being released. I'd really appreciate an answer of any kind rather than a sarcastic comment or a link to a vague, 10+ page thread

If you don't need unlock , update your itunes to the latest.
Hit restore in Itunes and you will be updated to 4.1
Activate your iphone first
Jailbreak with either GreenPoison or Limera1n.

Pretty much the same boat as OP. However I have the new bootloader (359.3.2), but shouldn't matter with greenp0ison right?
Anyways, my question is, if I do update to 4.1 and then JB with greenp0ison, will I retain all my original data (pictures, texts, contacts, apps, music, etc)? Multimedia isnt as big a deal since, I can just load it all up again, but my data from notes, docs, contacts is kinda important so don't wanna lose those.
EDIT: also I don't need an unlock

GP and limera1n are fine for phones that don't need an unlock. If you need an unlock, an old boot is necessary. Otherwise, do what yeow said.

Right, but is it going to be a fresh phone if I go that route? To clarify, do I need to do a full restore to get to 4.1 or can I just upgrade to 4.1 as if I was on a non-JB iPhone?
Appreciate helping out the newbs~

Thanks for bearing with me.
Okay, sorry for the confusion in my post, its been a while since I last synced/backed up.
So when I plug in my phone, it'll say new firmware available 4.1, click to update. I'm wondering if I can update to 4.1 and restore my data (from 3.1.3 JB) or if I have to first get to a clean un-JB 3.1.3 and then upgrade to 4.1?
Thanks again

Oh, no you can just hit upgrade from where you are.
There might be problems on restoring from back up with a 3.1.x to 4.x so look at this thread:

You should be able to restore you 3.xx backup to your new 4.1 firmware. The problem has always been trying to restore 4.x backup to a 3.x firmware (after a downgrade).
