It simply means you can restore to 3.1.2. It doesn't do you any good if you cannot use the iboot exploit. Anyway , I don't want to make it too complicated to understand.
You can restore to 4.1 and do the jailbreak, Limera1n is out but still buggy.

To make it simple, point your hosts file towards Cydia and do the Shift + restore to 4.0.1 and jailbreak with jailbreakme 2.0 from Safari on your iphone.

    @ yeow202
i'm having trouble downgrade from 4.1 to 4.0.1. tu indicates i have shsh save and that i can d/g to either 4.0 or 4.0.1.... anyway every time i get to shift and restore and i point to the 4.0.1 firmware it does nothing like the file doesn't exist. the file is in zip format and i have unzip it with winzip, i can see the file on desktop but when i click on it nothing happens. Can u please tell me what i'm doing wrong or not doing

Do not unzip, rename only the extension of .zip to .ipsw.

Not really, it depends on what browser you're using. If you use Firefox, it will download it as ipsw, but if you use Safari/IE, it may download it as a zip file.
