No matter what Firmware you are on, even 4.0 official, just go to the MMI downloads section and get

3.1.2 Firmware ModMyi Forums - Downloads - iPhone 3GS 3.1.2

Blackra1n RC3 ModMyi Forums - Downloads - blackra1n RC3

Point your hosts file to the Cydia Server where your 3.1.2 SHSH blobs are stored.

Restore to 3.1.2 EVEN IF you are on 4.0 official.

Run Blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1.2.

Now you are jailbroken again, simply upgrade to a Pwned 4.0 FW.

I JUST DID IT, it works PERFECTLY. I was on unpwned 4.0 official from where I upgraded last night

im on the latest 4.0 with my 3gs and am trying to JB and Unlock, not sure where to start though

Dont know about anyone else but my 3GS wont restore to 3.1.2, even though i have SHSH blobs saved for it, and have directed my host file to saurik's servers.

The only firmwares that seem to install for me are unpwned 3.0 (gives a 1015 error but works), and unpwned 3.1.3 (same)

THE ONLY thing you have to have to do this that you can't just "go get" is SHSH blobs on Cydia, if you have them there is NOTHING that will stop a 4.0 pwned jailbreak/unlock using this method.

I think if u jb 3.0 u should b able to upgrade to jbn 4.0. I could b wrong tho

Bypassing the Overlord

To this end, I have constructed a server that duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple's signature server, except using "on file" results rather than live requests.
All we need, then, is to make iTunes use it. Luckily, most operating systems also have the ability to locally define bypasses on specific hostnames through a file called hosts. Using this, we can redirect requests to Apple's signature server to Cydia.
So, open the file C

Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) or /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Now, when iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia's "on file" feature.
This server will also act as a cache for any SHSH blobs it hasn't seen, acting as an intermediary to Apple's server. This effectively registers your device with the "on file" mechanism, which means you can now enjoy the protections of being able to downgrade your firmware in the future even if you aren't jailbroken.

Does not matter I did it on the latest itunes that was just released. This flat out works no matter what. All you need is blobs and it will work.

Still having big problems, even following this method.

I can get it to restore to 3.1.2, but it gives me a 1015 error at the end.

iReb doesnt resolve the issue, and BlackRain just hangs during the installation.

Unsure how to proceed from here.

Ireb should fix it for u. Make sure that u installed "libusb" or ire won't work
