Can anyone help a new iPhone 3GS user?
I've had an ipod touch before and i did jailbreak it. Its running on 2.2.1. As you can see, its been a very long time. I just did a hardware upgrade today and bought a 3GS iPhone, i don't have data on this plan. I realize that I may be asking noob questions here and some of you may be angry, but keep in mind, I've been away from the scene for so long, I can't really catch up, so a quick update from you guys would really help me out.
I have a couple of questions
1. My iPhone is 3GS version 3.1, can i jailbreak it, if so, how? What is the best way? Any tutorials?
2. If i were to jailbreak it, which version is the most stable at the moment?
3. Which iTunes version is the most stable?
4. Any new "must-haves?" applications?
5. thank you

You should upgrade to 3.1.2, and use blackra1n. Very simple to use, just google blackra1n and you should come up with a few tutorials.
3.1.2
the latest one
ummm not that i know of lol
your welcomeThe only thing I ask in return for helping, is that you click the thanks button, Thanks!

Thanks man, made my life alot easier.
Hello, what is tethered? How do i know if my phone is tethered, here are some further information if it helps.
1. I just did a hardware upgrade on my old phone, my new monthly plan is the same as my old one, no data.
2. I bought it at the apple official store.
3. It is a 3GS 16GB
EDIT: i did a little research and my 3rd 4th and 5th serial is 938 so i think i have a pretty good chance?Last edited by chamilitary007; 11-21-2009 at 01:20 PM.

your 100% fine. you lucked out really!
Just make sure your running 3.1.2, and use blackra1n, its really easy lol
But to answer your question, tethered jailbreak means, you would need to run blackra1n, EVERY time you needed to turn on the phone...
So if your phone battery died, and aren't by a computer your SOL.
personally i would NEVER use a phone that needed to be tethered... my iphone freaks out every once in a while (every 3-4 days of never turning off), and sometimes the only way to fix it is to hard reset... I rather not be jailbroken, and still be able to restart my phone, than to be jailbroken, and need to carry my laptop with me everywhere i go...
But none of that applies to you, just a little information for yaThe only thing I ask in return for helping, is that you click the thanks button, Thanks!

Whoo, just to confirm, i want into DFU mode then checked out Device Manager, Apple Mobile Device USB Driver and under the Device Instance ID, i checked to see if there is any "iboot" and to my luck, there isn't.
As far as I know, it should be safe to jailbreak right?
(this is surprising as the new boot rom came out over a month ago!
(just waiting for confirmation
)
EDIT: I'm running on 3.1 firmware, do i upgrade to 3.1.2 through itunes? Or download it myself elsewhere?

I too would like to know this, I am also currently on 3.1 OTB..... Also it looks like no one answered his original Q. To reiterate, there's pretty much no benefit to be on FW 3.1? And the best bet for a jailbroken 3gs is to upgrade to the highest FW and use blackrain?

Restore to 3.1.2 through iTunes and use blackra1n or just make a custom firmware with PwnageTool and shift-restore to that through iTunes. Whichever method suits you.
