Are you just trying to restore through iTunes with an official firmware?
And how are you doing it?
Are you putting your phone in any kind of mode (DFU/Recovery)?
Are you shift-clicking or just clicking, restore?

I have had this come up a couple of times when forced to upgrade on my 3G. I was finally able to find a quick fix from the Apple helpdesk guy. Here's what to do.
1. Proceed with restore until you get to the "unkwown error 1604" hit okay then, with iPhone still plugged in x out of iTunes closing it off.
2. Relaunch iTunes and while the phone is still attached and click okay if prompted.
3. iPhone should then be able to finish where it left off.
According to the helpful iTunes support dude "Gerald" the USB port of my pee-cee is slower than the iPhone's needs and shows the error. You may want to make sure no programs are running in the background and you are not taxing the USB by doing other funtions or using hubs, docking stations, etc. Good luck from Mississippi!

The problem is i did it for one of my friend and i didnt have any problem, now i tried to jailbreak my fiance's iphone and after pressing make it rain with RC3 the phone didnt reboot! instead i got the connect to itune picture and thats it. When i tried to reboot it, itune gave me this message which is ( itune detected iphone in recovery mode ) and im afraid that this is the same thing .
i will post after i retry to restore the iphone
Sorry for the info , iphone 3gs v 3.1.2
I managed to jailbreak it by RC3 blackra1n on a MAC , and its running and i downloaded cydia and snow and everything works fine but there is only one problem which is each time i turn the phone off and i turn it back on i get the usb cable and the itune logo and i cant pass that unless i run blackrain again and jailbreak it again so please does any one know about this ????Last edited by cyrex; 11-05-2009 at 10:01 AM. It's because you have a 3gs with one of the new bootroms. The new bootrom fixes a bug used to run jailbreaks untethered (meaning the jailbreak just runs from the phone itself) and until an exploit has been found in the new bootroms, only tethered jailbreaking works.
What this means is, that for now, you'll have to connect your phone to your computer and run blackra1n every time you need to reboot/restart your phone.

Thanks for the tip. But what about if im not in the house to use the laptop and the iphone turn off by it self as it happen with my iphone few times, will that mean i cant use the iphone unless i jailbreak it again ?
one more thing please, thats my fiance's iphone, my iphone is already jailbreaked by redsnow 3gs running 3.0.1 and i have no problem with it but i like to upgrade to be able to use some apps which required 3,1 .
is it safe to upgrade or should i wait till the developer team make something for windows users like redsnow as i cant trust any website that offer a custom ISPW for 3.1.2 ??

You can only turn on your phone if you're near a computer, yes.
It's safe to upgrade to 3.1.2 and blackra1n/blacksn0w from there.
If you prefer the dev team's offerings, like I personally do, you need to find someone with a mac. No way to tell when/if there'll be a dev team solution out for windows.

05.11.07 is the baseband version and doesn't have anything to do with the bootloader.
You should be able to see it by looking at the serial number. The 4th and 5th digit tells which week it was manufactured in. About week 40 and onwards have the new bootrom I believe.
If you want to check it yourself, you can do a search for it as I'm not really sure how. Just search for something like 'finding iboot version'.Last edited by dhamien; 11-05-2009 at 06:09 PM.
