Well i need help.
I just got a 3gs the other day and i have a mac. I dont want to unlock (i have the AT&T contract) I just want to jailbreak for Cydia and what not.
I tried blackra1n. Followed all the steps and some other forums.
Didn't work
I tried watching tutorials of it on youtube.
Didn't work
Then I came across pwnage tool 3.1.4.
So i tried the same things and it didn't work.
... can the iphone 3gs 3.1.2 even be jailbroken???
Do i need to downgrade my phone? downgrade itunes? update itunes??? what can I do?
Please i need help

if its the VERY LATEST version of 3gS then im sorry but no, you can not jailbreak as the device has been patched so the "24kpwn" (think thats wot its called) won't work.
Being an i can be a lot of pressure. you have to live right up to the small point.

This is BS -- it can still be jailbroken -- just not unlocked...I've done it on my own OOB 3.1 3Gs with blackra1n...I have ATT as well, so didn't care about the unlock. Just go download blackra1n at blackra1n, and follow the instructions (all over the web) -- it works.

It is not BS. Newer phones are loaded with a new bootloader that prevents 24kpwning from happening.

To OP:
Just make sure you stick with whatever firmware you're on and don't upgrade when new firmwares come out.
To have the best chance of a future JB.
My condolences =(Don't worry I'm not in jail anymore

WRONG -- you folks don't know what you're talking about -- unlocking is NOT jailbreaking, and jailbreaking doesn't depend on the 24kpwn exploit. You can jailbreak ANY iPhone OS with Blackra1n -- not UNLOCK -- jailbreak...folks...
if you can't read, then don't post.

You're wrong. Look it up. Untethered jailbreaking does indeed rely on the 24kpwn exploit.

My bad, Dhamien, and sorry for the harsh words -- I just see SO much BS flying around, it drives me nuts.
This JUST happened 5 days ago, and even then, they say:
"Given how small the fix is, it seems likely that it was also applied to that updated bootrom of very recent iPhone 3GS devices. We'll be able to confirm this once we have an actual one of those in hand."
I have a 3Gs 3.1.2 that was purchased in the past week (6 days ago)...and just jailbroke it yesterday with Blackra1n, and it's working fine untethered.

Bought mine today from the Apple Store 5th Ave. and can't JB it and I'm very familiar with all of the processes.
Had no idea about this *fix* until this evening after I fried it a few times.

I've tried it several times and the result is always the same. It runs through the initial part, I see the photo of the kid, the wheel spins, reboots, and I get shown the connect to itunes screen.
Over and over and over.
Not working here. Am I missing something further? Wouldn't surprise me if I were.
Solution:
Ran RC2 and it pushes me into the connect to itunes screen...Somehow or another, after messing around with it, if I run blackrain again on my pc this time, it finishes successfully and I'm jailbroken.
Now, if I reboot and it puts me back to the connect to itunes screen, I can run blackrain on my mac and it'll work...Don't know why, but now I'm set until there's a proper untethered solution.Last edited by glowrider; 10-28-2009 at 08:24 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

No, what I, and apparently many other people had difficulty discovering was that after you run Blackra1n to jailbreak, you have to run it again when it is on the itunes screen.
This is new to many of us and it isn't spelled out clearly that for the initial jailbreak you have to run blackra1n twice in a row.
It makes sense later as to how it works. However, the first time, it is frustrating many users. If it was so clear nobody would have this problem that is on tons of boards. So, I'm sharing my experience so others may learn as well.
