you have to activate via itunes BEFORE you jailbreak. otherwise its no service.

even though i am not using the original att sim card?? any way around this? when i try to register it on itunes, it asks me for zipcode and last 4 ssn.. i bought this one on craigslist sealed.. what should i do?

you need to have an activated on att and have a contract or plan with them. otherwise it wont ever work. ( not the iphone fault, yoy need to go get set up with att)

OK, so I did the DFU restores and tried to jailbreak it with redsn0w but for some reason when I get to the part where I hold the home/power buttons down nothing seems to work. I hold the power button for 3 seconds, hold both down for the 10 then when I'm just holding down the home button nothing works. Did I get a bad copy of redwn0w? I tried the same thing on a 2g about a week ago and the same thing happened to me then. I'm trying to jailbreak/unlock a 3g currently.

er uhm thia is for the 3G[S], but i gav my 3G away to girlfriend but know a lot about it still.

on my first post you can find a copy of redsn0w that jailbreaks 3.0 and 3.0.1. for 3.1.2, use pwnagetool or blackra1n (blackra1n.com). if you use blackra1n, wait tilp after 11/4/09. it will also be able to unlock and jailbreak.

Ohhh, the 3Gs. My mistake. Basically I'm trying to DFU mode my phone so I can put the 3.0 on it. Apparently you have to be damn precise on the timing with the DFU or it won't work. I've seen a dozen different ways to do it and none of them have been working. I downloaded the redsn0w from the top of this post so we'll see if I can get things to work.

yeah perfect with timing. and why do you wan to downgrade? you can jaipbreak 3.1.2. likewise you should way to jailbreak 3.1.2 till afte the 4th when geohot will realse a new blackra1n.

i have tetherjng etc on 3.1.2, if that is why your staying back?

ah hello! surprised you even understood my last post, horrid spelling.

Anyways though, you should be on att carrier 5.5 or 5.6 i belive before you try this, and even then i think the spell thing on here shall block repos, but we will see.

so this works for 3G and 3G[S]. get the latest carrier setting via itunes.

in cydia, add this repo from my 'awesome repos to have list'. REPO:

SiNfuL iPhone Repo

then after its done, search this exact phrase "enable tetgering for". you will see one for 3G, one for 3GS. choose your device, then REBOOT.

After reboot, go to settings > general > reset > and reset your network settings.

after it is done, you can tether. Voicemail, MMS and tethering all work on 3.1.2 just fine, and thata how.

After losing all hope of getting this 1015 error, this is what i did , and worked like a charm.

Get redsn0w, 3.1.2 firmware, Connect iphone to laptop,

simple restore by pressing shift and point to the firmware.

You will get the 1015 error, say ok.

and follow the instructions as it is here :
iRecovery: Get Out iPhone from Recovery Mode Loop on Restart | iPhone

Next, shutdown your iphone completely.

Fire up redsn0w, and point to the firmware.

Follow instructions, press power and home button for 3 seconds,
home button for 10 seconds and the next for 15 seconds.

I guarantee you, that the redns0w will jb your iphone and complete it within 2minutes.

Your fw will now be 3.1.2 from 3.1.3 but the baseband will still show 5.12.1..

Wait for the next patch from anyone to fix the no service issue or to unlock it. So keeping my fingers crossed.

I still can use my wifi and hoping to use t-mobile with my iphone.

You might be able to use the official carrier - att but not t-mobile, so u cant unlock,
At least the iphone will be jb, and u can use the wifi and install apps,
waiting for a couple of weeks and hopefully we will have a patch released!!

I've got an iPhone 3Gs MC on 3.1.3 and it was never jailbroken to begin with.

Still I use this now downgraded 3GS without JB (to use it as a phone) and rebooted easily with irecovery (Mac).
Yeah, better be patient !
Nothing sure about our french carriers neither.

This seems to be the first step for the moment but it might be better around the 24th of april as they say...
