Question: Please answer.
There are many many posts here with the exact same question:

3) Running 3.0.1
4) Previously jailbroken
5) Working fine as of now
QUESTION: How to store the necessary files on Saurik's Server to be able to restore an earlier version of the firmware?
The only instructions that are 100% clear is to change the /etc/hosts file to point to Saurik's server instead of Apple's.
Everything else is confusing as all get out. Hence all the posts here with questions or requests for clarification.
What else do we users who are successfully running a 3.0.1 3GS jailbroken iPhone need to do to preserve our ability to downgrade??

It's not confusing. People just make new posts asking the same questions 6468896431 times instead of reading.

Regardless of the firmware version, your device will be hashed for the 3.1 firmware and you can downgrade to 3.1 should you need to afterwards.
You cannot restore to 3.0.1 though, since you don't have your files hashed last time it's on and Apple has stopped signing these firmware.

When you open Cydia on the home screen it should say something like "This iPhone 3G[s] has an ECID SHSH on file". This is all you need! If it doesn't say this then you should find the button that transfers this information to his servers. Whats confusing about that?
And I changed your title... it's not cool to call out the most important dev in the community (saurik) to answer this question when there are 500,000 fully capable members here for you.
