I just got a 3gs and it has 3.0.1 on it.
As far as I've gathered I can redsn0w it without any trouble, but there's no way i can save any future proofing files now.
- I can't capture iBEC and iBSS files since i cant restore old versions of the firmware.
- I can't get "on file" also because i can't restore to old versions of the firmware.
Am I right?

1. This is correct
2. You cant get 'On file' because Saurik cant take them for 3.0 anymore
Wait for the 3.1 Jailbreak, then you will be able to get your 3.1 signatures on file with Cydia, and you will be fine in the future. So long, and thanks for all the fish

Hi, new owner here... (3.0.1)
Can someone tell me (step-by-step if possible) what I should be doing here, to "future proof", or get my 3.1 signature on file?
Do I just do the hosts thing, or do I also need to do the restore?
Do I just jailbreak and "Make my life easier"?

Sit tight everyone... Saurik said he would be making it possible for all of you to "hash" your ECID for 3.1 via Cydia at some point very soon (he thought it would be last night but it hasn't happened yet). Keep checking Cydia for updates and a prompt that might say "Make my life easier". This can be done using a jailbroken 3GS running 3.0 or 3.0.1

because I think this phone doesn't need a restore, I'm just scared to death to jailbreak it in the past few days..
also don't need to do the etc/hosts terminal things?
