How do I "Bypass the Overlord"?

OK, I am trying to follow the instructions Saurik gave out tonight and I think it is a little over my head. I am using a 2008 MacBook aluminum that has been upgraded to Snow Leopard. I opened up terminal and typed in /etc/hosts and I got a "Permission denied" message. Is there something I am missing?

try this from your terminal:

sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts

OK, I did that and got this message:

I then entered my password and a seperate box popped up that said this:

Is this where I type in the 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com command?

OK, did that and now the window reads like this:

Does that mean I am all set to bypass the iTunes server and go to Cydia instead?

yup you're good to go. assuming you are "on file" go ahead with the rest of the steps.

This means that when itunes (or any other web request) tries to contact gs.apple.com, it will contact 74.208.105.171 instead

Unfortunately, I am not "on file". I clicked the "Make my life easier" thing in Cydia last week but I guess I was a little too late and instead of getting the "This phone has an SHSH ECID on file" I got the "This iPhone 3GS is not hashed for 3.0: too late" message at the top of my Cydia home screen. Saurik has told me that while I am not hashed for 3.0, I am hashed for 3.1

It's not a big deal right now since I am still running 3.0 and don't need to restore but I guess I might need it in the future. The only problem is that I won't be able to downgrade to 3.0, only 3.1

I don't think it will be a big deal since the dev team seems to be working on a JB for 3.1 as we speak.
