Apple has started offering a $999 version of their iMac exclusively for sale to educational institutions and the results are just, meh.

The iMac priced to go is available for educational institutions only, so unless you own a school, you can't get one of these. Also, the $200 in savings an educational institution is granted gets them a woefully inadequate computer. PC World has a nice run down comparing the education only model with a standard 2011 iMac.

A 10-year old hacker, going by the name of CyFi, demonstrated an iOS and Android hack to the DefCon Kids section of the conference today.

The exploit is exceedingly simple, and leave it to a 10-year old to figure it out. CyFi was sick of waiting for her crops to grow in an unnamed game (*cough*farmville*cough*). Being a kid, and by nature impatient, she set the clock forward on her iPhone ...

If you remember from about a month ago, a developer brought startup sound customization to iOS with his application iStartupSound. Although this application is not a staple function for iOS users, it is a fun tweak that gives you some unique customization to your iDevice. Vladislav Korotnev (@vladkorotnev) has recently released his second "sequel" to his line of startup applications called iStartupMovie. His new application once again brings a unique feature to the startup genre.

Last week, the blogosphere was buzzing with news that Apple was inching closer to unveiling a new service called “iTunes Replay," which would bestow to users the option to re-download and stream movies and television programs purchased through the iTunes store.

Speculation was kicked into high-gear one week ago today when Apple released a new Apple TV software update that allows users to ...

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released its first iOS app - a mobile application that focuses on child safety.

“You’re shopping at the mall with your children when one of them suddenly disappears. A quick search of the nearby area is unsuccessful. What do you do?” the FBI asks in a statement heralding the app's release. "Now there’s a free new tool from the FBI that can help."

The Mountek MT5000 iPhone Mount surprised me. It's a pretty typical universal mount as they go - a couple sliding arms with a quick-release button to release your device. However, it's got a couple features which set it apart, and the build quality was surprisingly great.

The box threw me off. It comes in a plain thin white box with a Mountek sticker on it. Inside the mount is in a plastic bag with a little folded piece of paper telling me ...

According to a report in Monday's online edition of Fortune magazine, Apple may be headed for its largest achievement yet - capturing the majority global market share for portable computers, a broad category that serves as a catch-all for laptops, notebooks, and, of course, tablet computers.

Deutshe Bank’s Chris Whitmore, who published his research-based findings behind the report, says that within ...

MobileMe users have languished in uncertainty about what would happen to the 20GB of base storage they paid when iCloud finally goes live and the subsequent discontinuing of MobileMe in June of 2012.

Apple has finally broken the silence. Apple will automatically sign up MobileMe users to the 20GB (+5GB free) iCloud plan at no charge (normally $40/year). Automatically signing MobileMe users ...

Apple has gone to great lengths in the latest version of the iOS 5 beta to make their implementation of a speech-to-text feature nary impossible to find.

9to5Mac released a screenshot of an updated iOS 5 standard keyboard complete with a microphone button. The speech-to-text feature is incredibly simple to use. According to 9to5Mac:

Updating and using the iOS 5 beta will be done at your own risk. Please be wary of the consequences and risks of using a beta firmware.

Today, Apple has released beta updates for all their enterprise products: iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, Xcode 4.2, and AppleTV. With the exception of iOS 5 beta 4 and AppleTV, all the other applications were updated to support the newly released iOS 5 beta. According to the release notes, this update should bring some much-needed ...

The Multitasking / AppSwitcher feature, first added in iOS 4, is a great implementation that allows quick switching of applications from anywhere on your device. For the most part, in terms of use for simple purposes, the AppSwitcher does a great job of giving you the options and methods you need to best use your device. The only downside to the Multitasking feature is that you're only able to remove one background application at ...

There's quite a few customizable cases on the market - today I'm taking a look at two which I've had samples of on my desk for a bit.

The PixCase, aka The Picture Frame Case comes from Jaymo, based out of lovely Waunakee, Wisconsin. They were started in 1991, with the founder's son as the first employee. I've also got a LikeMyCase, which is a company of "three guys from the North of England [who] got together randomly over a beer, and quickly found out they shared the same vision for personalized gifts."

The two cases take the approach to customization from different sides, ...
