The 2011 Consumer Electronics Show is going to be all about the tablets - an inevitable reality given the huge success enjoyed by Apple last year as the lone superpower in the contemporary tablet marketplace. And while Apple's touchscreen tablet may remain the top dog among tablets in 2011, it's certainly no longer going to be lonely within its category. With each passing day it seems another "iPad challenger" emerges. And CES 2011 ...

With few exceptions, most social networking apps that piggyback on Twitter's framework fail to deliver anything worth downloading, let alone uttering a word about to another social networking fanatic. Fortunately, such is not the case with UberSocial, a sweet new social networking app that comes to us from Tunji Afonja, a jailbreak developer whose work is hosted on ModMyi.

    Promising a ...

A patent applied for over a year before the new iPod nano came to light - but released last week - shows Apple is considering a simplified multi-touch interface for its smallest media player that allow a user to control it without looking at the touchscreen. Addressing issues some users have had operating the device when it's worn on a clip, the interface includes different combinations of ...

On Tuesday morning, Apple was trading up yet again, with shares of the tech company remaining buoyed above $330. It's a positive start to the first trading session after Monday's significant but somewhat overlooked milestone for the Cupertino outfit. During the first full trading day of 2011, shares of Apple popped 2% and effectively pushed Apple's market capitalization beyond the $300 billion ...

Microsoft is said to be in the final phases of readying a new Apple TV rival that will effectively expand the Windows Media Center to a whole new viewing audience: those in front of their television screen. With Apple's TV set-top box an established success, Microsoft's move makes sense and comes as little surprise. But the challenge for Microsoft is to become the next Apple TV... not the next Google ...

In an effort to differentiate movie downloads from DVDs, Sony is quietly testing new iTunes Extras features. iTunes Extras was first introduced back in 2009 as a way for movie studios to include bonus features, usually found on DVDs, with digital downloads. Sony hopes to entice movie views into buying digital versions of their movies by including a search feature in some of their new releases.

A somewhat enigmatic email from @comex is raising speculation that the next untethered jailbreak may be held back for iOS 4.3. An Italian blogger contacted the guy behind Spirit and JailbreakMe to ask for a short and sweet answer to the question of whether the untether will be available for 4.2.1 or 4.3, and received the response that it "depends when 4.3 is out."

    The Dev-Team ...

According to the latest numbers from Nielsen, Apple is clinging to a small lead over Android and BlackBerry in terms of smartphone market share in the United States. Based on November's data, the "race" for smartphone supremacy is - by Nielsen's own acknowledgment - "tighter than it has ever been."

Although the popularity of the Android OS among those who purchased a smartphone in the ...

While we all wait for an untethered jailbreak solution, the Dev-Team has updated redsn0w with a "one-click" option for the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak. Rather than the multiple screens you normally see, you can now use redsn0w on the command line to "Just boot tethered for now."

There are currently two major efforts towards an untethered jailbreak. The "jailbreak monte" backup plan is still in beta, and is only available to developers who have access to ...

Here's something few had seen coming. Apple has apparently - and surprisingly - given the green light to "Roll Your Own," a free application that delivers a fairly comprehensive selection of tips, pictures, and even video tutorials designed to help users "master the art" of rolling, packing, and "crutches." Yes, it's an app that Cheech and Chong would be proud of.

In 2010, Apple's (arguably) most successful product release was its touchscreen tablet dubbed the iPad, which effectively launched a new tablet marketplace for consumers that, before the end of 2011, will be teeming with similar competing products from other major names in the tech world.

On Monday, however, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicted that 2011 will likely not bring with ...
