With only days remaining until the dawn of a new year, it seems there's always time to squeeze in yet another celebration of the life and achievements of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. At least that's how the editors at The Financial Times feel, as they have officially named Apple's big cheese as their "Person of the Year" for 2010.

Of all the factors used to evaluate Jobs for the ...

Just in time for Christmas, Santa has brought us some new rumors about the iPad 2G, or - as I suspect it will be called - simply the 2011 iPad. The details are subtle enough to be believable: as opposed to rumors that it will have a Retina Display, or will make the owner invisible or convey immortality, these reports merely describe an iPad in a slimmer case, with both front and rear facing cameras and ...

Apple is working with a Native American tribe to not only help preserve the Cherokee language, but also to advance the language across the iDevice line-up. According to the Associated Press, Apple is both receptive to and supportive of the Cherokee people who want the iPhone, iPod, and iPad to be used as platforms for preserving and perpetuating their language, particularly among younger users of iDevices. ...

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the folks at Apple may receive a genuine compliment from Sony. According to an interesting new report in the New York Times, it sounds as though Sony's next generation PlayStation Portable handheld gaming device will "borrow" some of the winning attributes of Apple's smartphone/mobile-gaming-system known as the iPhone.

    Sony executive ...

Skyfire for iPad is now available in iTunes ($4.99). The iPhone version was released back in November and it sold so well that developers had to remove it from the App Store temporarily. Developers underestimated the demand for Flash video on the iPhone and users soon overwhelmed the Skyfire servers. These issues were soon worked out, however, and Skyfire has been a huge success ever since.

    Skyfire is a full-featured ...

Camera+ was a popular alternative camera app in its previous incarnations, making the #3 top seller on the App Store at its peak. Apple rejected it multiple times because the devs kept trying to sneak a mod that used the volume button as an alternative camera trigger past the reviewers. Now it's back, deemed acceptable by Apple, and with even more features than before in a slicker package.

If you're thinking this is old news, you're not alone. With Apple's rapid expansion of the iPad's retail availability, you would think that AT&T's online storefront would be among the first places beyond the hallowed ground of Apple sales territory to carry the iPad 3G. Incredibly, until this week, the iPad 3G was NOT available from AT&T's online store.

Don't look for any tremendous ...

On Wednesday, Sony fired a warning shot across the bow of iTunes. The tech giant is launching a new subscription-based streaming music service - first teased last September - that takes direct aim at iTunes' dominance in the world of digital music and entertainment. But according to Sony, don't expect a blatant iTunes' knock-off. Sony has something different planned. And it's pretty obvious what that ...

Apple is looking for engineers with extensive experience in the area of speech recognition in four new job listings that went up on their employment website this week. Christmas has come early for many "switchers" - those for whom transferring iTunes libraries between computers or among portable devices is a routine or otherwise recurring task. Given that syncing files between computers (particularly between Windows PCs and Macs) is not the most joyous of tasks, there will likely be some considerable comfort taken in the new CopyTrans application dubbed ...

Sales of Apple's recently refreshed Apple TV are expected to exceed one million units this week. How do we know? No need for market analysts or investigative journalists to get to the bottom of this one. On Tuesday, Apple released a formal statement regarding the rampant growth in sales and popularity of Apple TV.

While the usual iDevice suspects - iPhones, iPads, and ...

It comes as less than a shock to many that Apple has pulled the unofficial WikiLeaks iPhone application from the App Store. What is surprising, however, is that Apple allowed its entry in the first place. Released just days ago, the controversial app in question costs $1.99 and serves up access to the documents that make WikiLeaks what it is.

The application - while not officially affiliated ...
