  • Apple Loses Fight for 'iPhone' in Brazil

Brazil is not only a thriving market for smartphones and tablets, it's a highly-populated nation that Apple has made a high priority in the last twelve months. By Tim Cook's own admission, Brazil is where Apple would like to shift more emphasis, both in terms of production and sales of iDevices.

Unfortunately for Apple, there's some bad news coming out of Brazil at this hour. Brazil's National Industrial Property Institute has denied Apple's formal request to secure the exclusive rights to the "iphone" name.

IGB Eletronica SA filed to register the trademark in 2000. Incredibly, it didn't secure the rights until as recently as 2008, the year after the first iPhone was released in the U.S.

As of last year, IGB Electronica has even begun selling its very own "iphone," which is actually a smartphone powered by Google's Android operating system. In U.S. dollars, the device sells for approximately $300. Making matters even more strange is that the IGB started selling its "iphone" only after Apple started to sell its iPhone in Brazil.

this doesn't surprise me at all., even here in the US the iPhone name did NOT belong to apple and an 'iPhone' had been on the market for like 10 years before the apple iPhone.

True, but if you can't at least write properly then don't even bother writing to the public. A child could write better than this. I'm sorry to say this, but my 10 year old brother writes way better than this.

So the headline is false, they haven't lost the battle, the owner is willing to consider selling the naming rights. Nice media work, really tired of the media using scare tactics in almost everything today, from politics to now electronics. I thought journalism was to tell the story the way it is, not spin it so it's more interesting. I am quickly losing respect for modmyi, they hype up the whole droid crap and now this. Oh I will still log in and read your half truths......just so I can post something to make the droid boys get angry, set down their inflatable girl friends just long enough to mis-spell a reply to me (HINT-I never read the replies).
Good night and may the false news be yours.

Another reason why this site has been degrading over the past months.

What's wrong with critiquing someone's writing skills? If nobody critiques anything then nothing will be improved.

You're full of it. I seriously doubt your 10yo brother - or any 10yo for that matter - can write better. Except for one minor run-on sentence, I see nothing wrong with the writing. You're just being an ***.

By the way, as a compound adjective, shouldn't '10-year-old' be hyphenated?

The New York Times is about bringing daily news to readers. So it's also not about proper writing either? I have to agree with the OP.

Not really the same situation. In this case, the company didn't finally secure the name until after Apple's iPhone came out. AKA: "Oh ****, Apple's phone is popular, let's finally secure that name so we can charge then through the nose later!."

And they didn't have their iPhone actually made until Apple came into their market. AKA: "Let's just make our own and fool people into thinking their getting Apple's phone."

So, not really the same situation at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm not really condemning what they did. Business is business. But let's not pretend like Apple is trying to copy and rip them off.

I wasn't confused. You and the original whiner imagined the confusion.

Don't believe everything you read here as 99% of it is fanboy fluff.
Moose muffins! From an Android fanboy perhaps? Can you provide the math that got you the 99% figure?
