  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

I don't know how Verizon worx but w/ At&t, if you have a data plan (not a cellular plan) then tethering is free. Just curious what your current 'phone' plan already has...

Help! On 4s 6.1 jb. Regretting it! Since going from 5.1.1 to 6.1....

      A) Bluetooth not working (worked fine on 5.1.1)
      B) can't get skygo to work and can't use TV out
      C) iTunes won't back up since jail breaking. Took a chance and used the Evasi0n update (1.3) and it warned that the phone was already jb'd.

Can any of you lovely folk help?

If you restored a previous iTunes backup, it might've created some problems. Update to 6.1.1 and setup as a new phone. Use iCloud to backup your contacts, notes, etc before restoring.

This looks interesting. Can I assume I still have to jailbreak my ipad in order to get Cydia?

I have no data plan--I was just going to do some monthly stuff while camping in an area that has 3G. Can the above be used if you have no data plan? If so, why would anyone pay for a data plan?

Hold the home and lock button for ten seconds or until the screen goes black,(if you hold it longer it will try to reboot again), then try switching it on holding the volume up key until you get to your lockscreen. If you get back in open Cydia and remove the offending tweak/app

Cheers thazsar - I would update to 6.1.1 however part of the update process via iTunes is to to a backup and I can't currently do that (can do it OTA from phone to iCloud)....

Screen stayed black when I tried that, no lock screen or anything

I do know what was the last thing i installe don cydia before it started acting up, is there any way I can remove it so I can keep all my cydia stuff and dont have to rejailbreak or restore?

You did Power it back on while holding the volume up button, not by the trying to power up with the volume up button

All Big Boss packages were empty after jailbreaking, removed the source then re-added but I keep getting an error. Anyone seeing this issue?
