  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

Just tried it and restored the iPad3 with 6.1. Same issue, still stuck in the same exact spot as before.

hi all, ok i tried to get with the craze to update and jailbreak my ipad3 gsm on ios6.1 from 5.1.1. unfortunately i got the error (-1) despite using diff cables usb ports disabling security apps and using diff computers still get that error (-1).even tried using redsn0w and tinymbrealla to try and kick it out of recovery still no success. May i just ask is this a problem with the baseband of this gsm ipad perhaps corrupted? if so does mean the only option i have is to try and get it replaces at apple? if yes then i ask if the current state is in recovery mode due failure to update is it safe to try and get it replaced or will they know i have jailbroken and render a replacement invalid?

Why does the Mac link for evasi0n show up as a bunch of code?

Just leave your phones on gang til the devs fix this. The only tweak that requires a reboot is Winterboard. After installing Winterboard just hard reboot 3 times. It'll come back on. Then just leave your phone on!!

You do NOT have to restore!!!
I tried to do about 8 hard boot and it didn't work :/ I'm restoring now

Very strange. Must be a bad tweak. I have all my old tweaks back including some 'unofficial' for 6.1 and the 2-3 hard boot method has worked every time for me. Sorry you have/had to restore. Pain in the azz!

      Best-kept secret EVER! -->
Every time you download a tweak from Cydia (after a fresh restore + jailbreak), BEFORE YOU "RESPRING" OR "RETURN TO CYDIA" OR "REBOOT", SSH into your phone or use iFunBox to navigate to var/private/cache/apt/Archive. Hit the refresh key in your SSH program. You'll see the.deb files of each of the tweaks and their dependency files that just got onloaded into your phone. Save every one of those.deb files to your computer.

If you ever have to restore again all you'll need to do is create a folder here:
var/root/Media called Cydia, And then another folder inside Cydia called AutoInstall. Capital letters matter in both of those names. Then simply transfer all those .DEB files into the var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall folder and reboot twice and you're BACK! No Cydia wait time ever again.

Now go ahead and hit that THANKS button. C'mon you know you want to!! :-)

I accidently removed Cydia, but I still have all my tweaks, can I re install Cydia without having to Re-jailbreak?

Probably not. I'd be more careful in the future if I were you.

      you can

      1) Download http://cache.saurik.com/debs/cydia_1...honeos-arm.deb
      2) SSH the package to /var/mobile on your device.
      3) Open Terminal and type the following:

      su
      alpine
      dpkg -i cydia.deb

      4) Reboot (twice sometimes)

      5) install Cydia Translations from Cydia

Edit: I'm interested to know how you deleted it though

Can anyone confirm that the "set" button when you're wanting to change your wallpaper on your home screen or lock screen is broken? You can click on set 30 times and nothing happens. Is this happening for anyone else?
