  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

      Calculating dependencies... done!
      [ebuild N ] app-pda/libplist-1.8-r1 USE="-python" 80 kB
      [ebuild N ] app-pda/usbmuxd-1.0.8-r1 58 kB

Total: 3 packages (3 new), Size of downloads: 634 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] y
Now the device is recognized by evasi0n.

But the lib errors remain ... even with openssl-1.0.0j installed :/

Did you buy your phone unlocked? Are you in the US? Is your carrier AT&T? Because if your phone isn't grandfathered in, you carrier won't unlock your phone. There are forums about this subject, but since the carriers paid off the politicians, they passed a law about unlocking. If you had got your phone last year, there were various companies offering unlocks for the iPhone 5 when it came out.

I'll wait abit to install the new jailbreak. After reading all of this, it seems a lot of people are new to the JB scene and want to get their phones jailbroken. I know the feeling since I have an iPhone 5 and it is very boring running it stock. The same questions are being asked about Cydia again and again. Just be patient and wait. You may or may not get the apps you need there because of the rush. I just want to get into my account (which I haven't heard anyone having success getting to that page) to make sure I still have my paid apps and when I will have to update or pay more. This is what we've been waiting for, and with all of the iDevices out there to be JB, it will be a week or more before it dies down. If Apple gave us what we wanted in the iPhone in the first place like SBSettings (one of the must haves); or iFile; or the ability to customize and personalize the phone, there wouldn't be the need to JB. Just look at the numbers of people who are jailbreaking their phones. The iPhone is a very powerful device, and it could be made better if it is utilized to the fullest. That's why I have been jailbreaking my phone (since the 3GS). What the evad3rs done is create a solution just as good as Comex's JailbreakMe.com. But I may wait till trusty Redsn0w is updated, (or unless Apple goes to 6.1.1 and stops signing 6.1 just for spite) and the kinks are worked out like the weather app problem. (I hope by then it is fixed and can use WeatherIcon)

Thanks for this JB and carry on........

Everything went smooth for me. I have been getting apps and tweaks from cydia and all the good stuff but I noticed I can't send sms or mms to other phones. The only people I cant text are other iPhone users? Any idea why or if there is a way to fix this? Thanks

Just did My iphone 5 that was on 6.1. The jailbreak went smooth. My weather program did not work afterwards. Went into cydia and there was an undate for the jailbreak. Installed the update and rebooted. Now my phone is stuck on the apple boot logo. Restoring to a back up until the the jailbreak is a little more polished. Good job to the evasi0n on getting this far just a couple bugs to squish!

Same thing happens after Respring of Iconclasm. That means its a bigger bug than just Soringtomize.

I have one of these. Works perfectly for me. I can move my nano SIM back and forth between my 4S and 5.

Gridlock is not supported for iOS 6.1 on ANY phone. It will cause SafeMode crash every time. Bummer. It's a very "central" themeing tweak that is needed by all of us pretty much. But they always take a "very" long time to get it compatible with the newest iOS. :-( In the meantime all you can do is use Blank icons as space holders. Like the frickin Stone Age. .

And because someone will ask the same question again, no, there is no other tweak it does anything like Gridlock. You'll just have to wait until they fix it for 6.1.

Restoring isn't really necessary when you're stuck on the Apple logo. It just takes 2 to 4 "hard reboots". Has worked for me each time I got stuck there.

Anyone having issues with "Pending Transactions" on Cydia?

I've been purchasing apps and tweaks and so far I've purchased about 7 or 8 tweaks/apps in the past 2 hours.

The ones that are giving me "Pending Transactions" for a long time are:
      1. Flex
      2. Safari Download Manager
      3. CallBar
      4. and a couple of others

I'm not sure if it's due to many people purchasing those apps/tweaks or if it's a different issue from something else. Other purchases I've made have gone through with out problems.

I downloaded CallBar and Auxo about an hour ago. It took 2 try's within 5 minutes but they work with no problem. I had to close Cydia all the way out and come back in.

      Good news from Planetbeing

@planetbeing: We're also working on improvements to the long reboot time problem, those should be out with a Cydia update.

No ETA and he doesn't want to be asked.

The long Apple boot thing had nothing to do with Winterboard. Same general issue as Weather App crashing.

Both will be fixed in an upcoming download from Cydia AND included in new Evasi0n jailbreak updated tool. No need to re-jailbreak.

Planetbeing says it'll be done when its done.

The brightness problem hasn't gotten to their radar yet.

No Docked/Undocked icon labels thing needs to be sent to Saurik. That MAY be a Winterboard thing or system thing. Hard to tell. Workaround is to use Springtomize to hide icon names.
