  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

Everything is running smooooooth like exlax on my 4S. Only problem I'm dealing with is the traffic on Cydia. Can you lot stop trying to get on there for about 30mins so that I can grab what I need??!!!!

Seriously I hope all the people that are having issues get it sorted. I can imagine it can be a bit frustrating.

I just git about five tweaks with no problem. Ya should be good now. Paid tweaks like mywi or weekillbackgroubd seem not be working as for as buying the tweaks.

Close cydia out and reopen and try it again.

There are some whiny people on here. First read every bit of information you have. Don't complain because you weren't the one developing it and wasting your time to help the community. Y'all are the same people who whined about not having a JB and then expect it to be flawless day 1. Ridiculous. Be happy you have something. If you don't like it complaining on here will not make it any better JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ.

And this is only like 10/1000 people on here. So don't take it personally anybody with legitimate questions.

This seems to be a big help when getting an error. Seems like if you download a lot at once you should close cydia every now and then for right now.

the only thing m cydia is failing now is

      Failed to fetch
      http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/./packages.gz Host Unreachable

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored or old ones used instead

Hard close cydia and try to re-install again from Cydia. No guarantee but may help.

Anyone seeing this?: If you respring Springtomize2, screen comes up dim, and you have to go to brightness and just touch the bar, and it returns to normal. Weird.

I think respring in general is doing this. Mine did it on a regular respring.

      AMEN!

After MANY MANY times of trying....I finally got SBSETTINGS installed during the night on two of my 5 iphones; of course the two I did get it on, were my phones of course LOL! Point is, the servers are smashed folks; give it a few more days and you'll see that all or your concerns, will start fading away, just like it did many JB's before this one.

      Anyone on linux?

I get this error message on gentoo linux: (kernel 3.6.11-gentoo)

./evasi0n.x86_64: /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.1.0.0: no version information available.

      Any advice?

I have this problem. I just exit springtomize when I'm finished and respring in sbsettings, no dimming problem that way

Does it tell you which other dependices you need? Or what is conflicting with it? Have you installed a decent amount of cydia apps? Or is this your first one?

From past experience when I would get this it was because of two repos conflicting with each other so I would just uninstall the apps conflicting and install both from same repo, or pick which one I wanted/needed more.

Also could try ClearCydiaListCache, or Hard Reboot.
