  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

I may have missed it, but how do I fix my weather app from crashing on my iphone 5 6.1?

Managed to JB my iPhone 5 during work today.
Planning to update my 3rd Gen iPad tomorrow during work and re-JB it. Finally be on par on all of my devices w.r.t iOS versions.

Now only if GV SMS Extension gets updated soon, as that is the tweak I utilize most on my iPad right now since iOS6 broke the SMS extension somehow (apparently the Phone extension works).

Well the fun didn't last very long, I guess we have to wait for the servers to not be over loaded, and the purchase system to come back online. (along with my account history) Maybe later tonight or tomorrow? we'll see, talk about a tease having Cydia and not being able to install anything.

This board needs a 'sticky' post at the top of the page: "Weather app issue. Cydia swamped. Relax."

We'd be on page 12 instead of 30!

im jailbroken on ios 5, is there a way to update to 6.1 and rejailbreak without losing all my music, etc (not saved on my computer)

If you all are still having issues getting your Dependency files, go to my repo and get 'Dependencies for iOS 6.1':

      repo.itortrix.com

You'll have to manually Reboot about three times, then you should be good!

Try Xilisoft iPhone Magic Platinum... I find it the best software till date. Comes with a small price but there are "other" ways to get it too.. I prefer supporting the software developers after I tried it for a month.
Everytime I format my Windows... I use that to import all my music from my iPhone to iTunes. Been using it for almost 2 years now.

For everyone with the weather app problem (I'm guessing that's most people), I have a suspicion it has something to do with the evasi0n untethered update.

My weather app worked perfectly on both my ipad and iphone 5 after jailbreaking, then proceeded to crash after I stupidly updated the jailbreak on Cydia (mostly because, like most of us idiots, I can't stand to see the update notification without updating). If you had the same experience then we can say that it's the culprit. If, however, the weather app quit on you even before you performed the evasi0n update on cydia, then there might be another reason.

In any case, Musclenerd says they're working on a fix:
“@MuscleNerd: For those seeing the Weather app problem, @planetbeing has started working on a fix. Until then, just don't go outside.”
      . Let's hope it's a simple and quick fix.

Jailbroke my 4S, installed cydia. Had that problem with the apple logo but it finally restarted after a couple of hard reboots. So far I've managed to install SBSsettings, but that's about it. Weather app worked before the hard reboots, but now crashes like everyone else's. And that's the progress report.

My only question now is- is it safe to reboot? Or will it require a hard reset with every reboot? I'm too scared to find out tonight.
