  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):

    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

I know the cydia servers are getting pounded right now. But is that the reason for all the cydia errors?

      Iphone 4S IOS 6.1

Jailbreak went smooth but stock weather app not working.
Sometimes sticks on apple logo when trying to turn phone on. Had to reboot while stuck on apple logo to get phone to turn on.

Might be a good idea to hold off until some more bugs are worked out.

I'm with him, if everyone could just wait a little while so the two of us can download all of our Cydia favorites that would be great..

Lots of Cydia errors.... I would assume Cydia is getting hammered right now. Unintentional DDOS by all the happy users!

I try 2 jailbreak my iPhone 5 6.1 and download Evasi0n on the website. I hook it up to start the process. Evasi0n said my device compatible. Then I get to the Part that is says to continue please unlock your device and tap the new jailbreak icon Only tap it once the screen will go black and then return to the home screen. But I do not see the new jailbreak icon on the iPhone 5 Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Should show up on your last page of icons... I did a 4S and iPad4.. both took about 5 minutes with no issues.

Others are having the same issue including myself. Going to try a restore and re-jailbreak to see if it fixes the problem. Will post when I'm done ^_^

I only want FolderEnhancer, so everyone kindly stop downloading and I'll let you know when you can resume.. thanks in advance!

      Your Pal,

      Oneduality

lol .. seriously, Cydia is definitely choking under the weight .. Apple is probably seeing the 6.1 download rate skyrocketing.

And I'm also suffering from the weather app crashes.. but I don't use it anyway

I would restart your computers if your having trouble.
I updated my ATT ,unlocked from contract, iphone 4 this morning backed up fine but kept getting errors trying to write 6.1 in DFU.

Restarted my pc, I DFU'd the i phone 4 and it loaded right up. went from 6.01(saved as back up) to 6.1
Will wait for tonight to j/b.

Ill do the wifes Verizon 4s too.

Since it is recommended to not use your backup when you restore, does anyone know of a way I can save all my text messages? Thanks very much.
