  • How to Jailbreak your iPhone 5 or iOS 6.x iDevice with evasi0n

NOTE: This guide is now outdated. The current guide uses evasi0n 7, and is at http://modmyi.com/content/13169-how-...evasi0n-7.html .

    {last updated March 12th, 2013}

This Windows, OS X, and Linux guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using evasi0n. The current version of evasi0n is 1.5.3. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 3GS | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 4S | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2
    • iPhone 5 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 4G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPod touch 5G | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad 2 | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • The New iPad (third generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad With Retina Display (fourth generation) | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2
    • iPad Mini | 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.2

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (@pimskeks, @planetbeing, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able! You can also do so on their website (same PayPal); scroll down and click the green Contribute button.

NOTE: Before running the evasi0n jailbreak, you should fully back up your data via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now) or iTunes.

If you are on a lower firmware version than iOS 6.1.2 (again, here's how to check), it is highly recommended you update your phone to iOS 6.1.2 BEFORE jailbreaking. If you haven't yet, you should do this through iTunes, NOT over the air (it's ok if you already have) by following this guide.

Alright, let's assume you're now on iOS 6.1.2 (this guide will also work on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1, but it is best to update to 6.1.2) and backed up.

Let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the version of evasi0n for your operating system:

    OS X evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nmac153.
    Windows evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nwin153.
    Linux evasi0n 1.5.3 at mod.my/evasi0nlin153.

Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, and only one device, double-click evasi0n to launch it. You will see the evasi0n home screen, and evasi0n should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Click the Jailbreak button to begin.

evasi0n will tell you it is connecting to the device, then retrieving information from the device to generate Jailbreak data. This process can take a minute or two, be patient and don't press anything.

evasi0n will then go through many status messages while it reboots and jailbreaks your device. This process also can take a few minutes. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Side note - the step saying "Uploading Cydia packages list..." is a brilliant move on the evad3rs part - it includes a recent list of all packages on default Cydia repositories, including ours, which means when millions of users open Cydia for the first time on their newly jailbroken devices, our servers are not immediately hit with large file downloads. Thanks to saurik for the idea and the evad3rs for the implementation!

At the end of this process, evasi0n will let you know there is now a new Jailbreak icon on your iDevice, and to unlock your device and tap the icon. ONLY TAP THE ICON ONCE, LEAVING YOUR DEVICE CONNECTED.

After doing so, evasi0n will run through more status messages as it continues to jailbreak your iDevice. Don't touch anything.

Cydia is now on your iDevice! You can press Exit in evasi0n now - your jailbreak is complete.

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

NOTE: If you get stuck on any of the following messages: "Initializing offsets, Finding offsets, patching kernel, or cleaning up," for more than 5 minutes, you can simply do a hard reboot (hold Power and Home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the iDevice restarts).

Need help. I have just upgraded my iPhone 5 and iPad mini to IOS 6.1. iread somewhere that I need to do a clean restore before jailbreaking my IOS device. My questions are; What command in MAC do I press in order for me to do a Restore and where does the .ipsw file in my computer resides? Same also with Windows, where can I find the ipsw file in Windows and what command is needed to do a restore? Thanks for those who would assist.

      Alt + restore

The file of the .IPSW depends on your settings and how you got it. If you downloaded it, it should be located in the downloads folder but this is assuming thats your default setting

I also had the weather app crashing issue at first too. iPhone 4S on 6.1

I just did the jailbreak without a fresh restore and it kept crashing.
Then I did a clean restore and jailbroke and works fine with no problems.

I haven't noticed any battery draining extensively due to the jailbreak. I left for class this morning and jailbroke my phone around 12:30am and haven't had a problem. I have been using it a lot too. Maybe you have just been too excited all day using the internet to read up on the news.

Not noticed that myself.. my 4s is at 85% after being unplugged from any pour source for about 2.5 hours.. I've been using it also but not a ton.. not the greatest performance, but not nearly as bad as that.

this jailbreak has issues for me on my iphone 4S have done a full wipe with recovery mode 3 times now

      1st time
full wipe and then jailbreak as per instructions, cydia loaded fine did reload it said there was an evasion update did update and tried installing sbssettings but of course cydia is jammed. So i decided to reboot and bam i get apple logo and even after 10 minutes phone never boots

      2nd time
full wipe again and jaibreak after wipe did evasion update and rebooted. again white apple of death.

      3rd time
full wipe didnt even setup my apple account or wifi jailbreak didnt even open cydia. Reboot phone. White apple of death

Hopefully team can figure out what the issues are. Ive jailbroken my phones previously and with there app its almost retard proof so i know im doing it right.

I think I'll restore and they can keep this jailbreak.
Agreed! Have just restored my i5 to 6.1 will stay unjailbroken until an update or fix is released. Managed to tear out the artwork files tho before I did and extracted them but not the Assistant one.

      Let's hope they update it.

I also get the white apple of death after doing a power cycle. Apparently this isn't really an untethered jailbreak. I'm going back to stock until this gets sorted.

      Wow.
Now imagine if they charged a $10 fee/mandatory donation for this jailbreak. Let's be honest, $10 isn't much. But if they did that and it did hit 100k+ downloads, they would have cleared a cool $1,000,000.

The IRS talk would suck though...
