  • iOS 4.2 Beta for iPad Released to Developers

That's right, its here folks. iOS 4.2 Beta has been released to Developers in the Apple center. This is great news for iPad owners, however it may also delay jailbreaking a little further, assuming that iOS 4.2 is right around the corner.

The new iOS update is expected to include a number of new features, including multitasking, folders, along with printing and the ability to use AirPlay via itunes with your iPad, juts like the Airport Express.

The update is currently available at developer.apple.com. I would imagine there are a ton more features that have yet to be uncovered, but it's great to see iOS 4 coming to the iPad. Stay tuned for updates

The official 4.2 update is slated for November. 2 months away

This release is labeled as Build Number 8C5091e. The update is available for iPad, iPhone (3G, 3GS, and 4) and iPod touch (second-, third-, and fourth-generation). iOS 4.2 for iPad comes in at 514 MB, where as the iPhone 4 firmware comes in at 617 MB. It does seem that the firmware loads a little faster, but that could just be in my head

Why is that retarded? The rotation lock becomes software like all the other iOS 4 devices and this ADDS functionality that wasn't there before.

I love the switch back to the mute button.. I almost never used the rotation lock, but the the mute is something I use all the time.

AirPlay is really great, although not 100% smooth yet. Once you've switched to streaming audio from within the iPod app, audio streams from every app including games. I kind've doubt it will be this way in the final release, but for now, that's pretty cool.

If I stream a movie in Netflix, I can stream the audio to my stereo. Remarkably, the sync is pretty tight and it all plays smoothly.

So far I haven't gotten printing to work. I have a Brother wireless printer and it just doesn't see it at all. I tried sharing it wired on the network, but no joy there either. It appears that every app will have to be modified to use printing anyway. The only places printing seems to be available right now is in Safari, Mail, and Photos.

it seams that only HP printers are supported by the AirPrint

      At least for now.

Guys, I really need to put my hands on that beta, I've been waiting for so long....I had this big disaster upgrading the iPad(I think related to WiFi Sync, like other people are reporting) that I had to upgrade to the last vers (aka not jailbreak). I'm not a developer, how can I donwload that firmware? Your help appretiated...cheers

It started out as a mute button too, and at the last second was changed to rotation inhibitor. Hopefully the same thing will happen here. Or - hey - providing the user the choice; but since when has that ever been Apple's prerogative?

How does switching the buttons location for two functions add functionality?

How have you never.. what.. I.. what is this I don't even. It is a very useful feature for when you're, say, reading a book or something. Sometimes there are very real situations when you don't want the orientation to change.

Let me ask you all this: which makes more sense, having a mute button in the sound-related (iPod) panel with other sound related things, or moved to the side of the device? How does having a rotation inhibitor button in the iPod control panel make sense to you? Obviously none of you have ever taken an HCI class.

what's funny is i can load jailbreakme website on the phone and my modem firmware does not changed from 1.59.00 so i tried the website it's just now downloading because safari was patched. I have an idea if we can make a small patch it can jailbreak 4.2 dev one.

Um... right now a mute button does not exist... with the new firmware it makes the switch a mute button. This would be a NEW function for the iPad. Is this concept difficult for you to grasp?

I can assure you it defy itely is worth losing the jb. For me at least, the iPad jb has just been a cool feature, not something I rely on like mywi on my i4.

Not sure if I am happy about the mute button idea. I used it a many times for when watching shows/movies before I go to sleep.

If this is a forsight on a possible 4.2 for the iphone then apple is playing their cards right because no dev team is going to release an iphone jailbreak when the ipad is showing that a new ios version is being developed. +1 to apple, they are out smarting the jailbreak community, if they keep this up there wont be jailbreaks anymore.

To wrap things up if 4.2 comes out in november for ipad, the dev team will wait cause 4.2 beta may come out in november for the iphone.

Right now, if you hold down the volume down button for like 3/4 of a second the volume is automatically changed to 0. Thats pretty much just as good as mute in my handbook. Growing up I have rarely had a use for a mute button, even on my TV. What I have had a use for on a consistent basis is an easy-to-access switch for disabling auto-rotate.

Back to my point about good user interface, a mute function, which does not exist on the iPad right now, should be delegated to the iPod dock menu (really, think about it) rather than wasting a hardware switch for it. IMO.
