  • Apple Ending European Mac Pro Sales March 1st

Apple will no longer sell its Mac Pro series in Europe beginning March 1st. According to details coming directly from the Mac-maker today, stringent regulatory requirements prompted the decision.

Apple made the announcement via written letter to the company's myriad resellers in the Euro channel. Amendment 1 of Regulation IEC 60950-1 is being blamed for the pullout, although Apple didn't get into specifics regarding how the Mac Pro violates regulations or why the machines couldn't be updated for compliance.

The text of the letter is as follows:

As of March 1, 2013, Apple will no longer sell Mac Pro in EU, EU candidate and EFTA countries because these systems are not compliant with Amendment 1 of regulation IEC 60950-1, Second Edition which becomes effective on this date. Apple resellers can continue to sell any remaining inventory of Mac Pro after March 1.

Apple will take final orders for Mac Pro from resellers up until February 18th for shipment before March 1, 2013.

Countries outside of the EU are not impacted and Mac Pro will continue to be available in those areas.
Although the announcement seems serious and with potentially far-reaching consequences, Apple likely won't see much bottom-line blow-back, as the high-end machine doesn't generate mega-bucks for Apple in Europe anyway. Future looming refreshes of the computers may be compliant with regional regulations and could help re-introduce the product line to European consumers before long.
