  • iPad 2G With FaceTime For the Holidays?

According to "person with proven knowledge of Apple's future product plans," Apple may be hard at work on a second-generation iPad with a front-facing camera that will support FaceTime, and may possibly be preparing it for release in time for the holiday buying season. AppleInsider is reporting that Apple plans to make its whole range of iOS devices FaceTime-compatible before making the video conferencing API accessible by other platforms, in hopes of getting ahead of the market opportunity for competitors like Skype and Qik.

When Apple announced FaceTime with the iPhone 4 in June, Steve Jobs made a commitment to push the video conferencing protocol as an open standard that could be used on non-Apple devices. AppleInsider's sources indicate that the company is on an "ambitious push" to get a front-camera equipped iPad on the market no later than the first quarter of next year, ahead of any release of the API. With FaceTime support in the iPod touch as well as the iPhone, Apple clearly hopes to lead competitors by having millions of compatible devices out there. Rumors of desktop support by Apple programs like iChat on Mac OS X and Windows persist, and if they come to fruition would put Apple in pole position as the market opens up.

Video-chat makers like as Qik and Skype have flagged their interest in building FaceTime support into their software, which would open up access to a range of desktop and mobile clients. Qik is preloaded on a number of popular smartphones like the Evo 4G and Epic 4G, and have said they expect to have clients running on 75 million devices by the end of 2011.

I would almost bet money on facetime camera, they're promoting that any way they can so it'll get big and not be a lost cause. I mean why else would they leave it open for other phones to use and possibly computers.

But by the holidays? That'd be great if it did come out then, but I'm not holding my breath.

It may happen but I doubt it will be before the scheduled springtime releases. I'd be more inclined to think if it does happen early it will just be a higher designated model in the same line (same A4, RAM and display) but with the lower end cams from the iPod Touch G4. They would be more likely to move up to more RAM, better cams, retina display, higher processor and greater capacity (maybe 128GB) at the springtime releases to optimize sales on existing hardware.

I doubt it'll be on sale soon, if there was a time for them to announce it, it would have been at the september event and I don't think they're just going to drop it on the apple store without some event.

ok heres what I think the deal is:

I recently talked to a guy the works with Apple at Cupertino, he is a good friend of a friend of mine (true story )
So we go into conversation and started talking about the ipad and the iPad 2 (that's what it should be called)

So he gave me a few facts about it:

      1. There will be two versions and "ipad mini" with a 7" screen and a iPad with a 12" screen possible retina

      2. It will have a front/back facing camera

      3. It will not run on iOS any more!! But on a modified version of OS X which will still let you use the AppStore Apps but just like widgets

      4. It will have 2-3 USB Ports (for cameras etc.)

      5. Will be released spring 2011

I'm not trying to put fake rumors out. But this is what the guy told me.

      Cheers

Makes perfect sense from a business point. Make a lower end model to test the waters with early adopters and find out what people will pay for when new model is going to be released. That way you get the first buyers sucked in to buying newer and better model with very next iteration. Max out the profit margins for sure.

Android tablets been had usb and front facing cameras its a gimmick. if ur friends don't have an ipad iphone 4 or touch to recieve facetime, it's no fun video conferencing alone.

That would be really cool. With the release of iPhone 4 and the new iTouch with front facing camera and now the iPad you will definitely have someone to facetime with.

To an extent, I agree with you. Only a matter of time before skype rolls out an update that utilizes their video chat features on Apple's mobile devices though...
