  • iOS Hackers Deem iOS 6.1 Jailbreak Safe, Go Ahead and Update Through iTunes

iOS hackers MuscleNerd and planetbeing have both confirmed that the public release of iOS 6.1 is jailbreak safe! The update is vulnerable to all of the vulnerabilities that the hackers had planned on using to jailbreak iOS 6.1. That being said, update away! (Through iTunes)

According to planetbeing, while the firmware can be jailbroken, it's going to take a little while to get everything all polished up, bug free, and get a jailbreak method that can be released to the public:

If you’re excited to jailbreak your iOS 6.1 devices, the good news is it’s only a matter of time now. The jailbreak will include 22 different variants of iOS devices, including Apple’s new iPhone 5, iPod touch 5G, iPad (fourth generation), and iPad Mini. It will also include older iOS devices that can run iOS 6.1, excluding the Apple TV 3, for now. You can view our post to see the full list of supported devices.

Jailbreak or not, I only care about software unlocking, will I be able to unlock iPhone 5 via software after this jailbreak? When I travel abroad, I need to keep my iPhone around me because all of my contact information are there, but I have to carry another phone for local phone calls and network access, I need to be able to combine them into one device. No, never international roaming, cannot afford that ridiculous rate.

      Nope.

Soft unlocks seem to be a thing of the past.
Ask your carrier for an unlock.

Or, if you bought yours before Jan 25,
try one of the commercial unlock services.

What about restores? I had no issues but wasnt sure a reg update in iTunes would suffice on down the road.

      Thanks for the reply 2k1

Software unlocks are very old school, dude. Just do a permanent unlock for $6 on eBay. So easy. Permanent unlock. Software unlock is a waste. Really..

Everybody pays the same on eBay. Just have to factor in currency conversion. But no way would it cost 70 Euros on most unlock places on eBay.

Actually some carriers I have seen official unlock prices as high as $170.

The incompatible build error is persistent even through iTunes. I ended up updating OTA. Will try to restore through iTunes later to see if it'll go through.

So I updated over the air, will that mess me up and I will not be able to jailbreak or what?

I would say not a good idea. Sometime OTA doesn't work with trying to jailbreak ya phone.
