In mid-December, Facebook launched
a new application in the App Store called Facebook Poke
. The application allowed you to poke any of your Facebook friends with pictures, videos, or messages that you could set to disappear after a certain period of time.
The application was obviously Facebook’s attempt to compete with Snapchat
, another iOS application that would allow you to send friends photos and messages with time limits. Both applications were available for free in the App Store, but in the end it was obvious which one would be the most popular solution.
Snapchat remains the 14th top free application in the Top Charts section of the App Store, while Facebook Poke, once at the top of the list as well, is nowhere to be found in the Top Charts list. So where did Facebook Poke go?
Facebook Poke is still in the App Store for free, but its launch doesn’t appear to have been as successful as Facebook may have originally planned. According to stats from App Annie
, an application ranking statistics service, Facebook Poke has tanked all the way down to number 706 in the top free applications in the App Store:
Facebook Poke's popularity over time.
Although Facebook Poke's popularity has tanked, we can see that Snapchat has kept its position pretty well. Although it appears to be dropping slightly, it's nowhere near as dramatic as Facebook Poke's drop:
