  • Google CEO: Tech Industry Needs More Innovations

In a recent interview with Wired, Google CEO and cofounder Larry Page offered his take on the state of technology, saying that companies like Apple and Facebook need to dedicate more resources on innovation rather than competition. He expressed concern regarding company leadership, saying there is too much attention being paid to competition. When asked about a specific case involving the late Steve Jobs’ comment of “going thermonuclear war” on the Android platform, Page responded with, “How well is that working?” Page continued by saying the following:

But it’s hard to find actual examples of really amazing things that happened solely due to competition. How exciting is it to come to work if the best you can do is trounce some other company that does roughly the same thing?
On the topic of Google X, the internet search giant’s experimental products lab, Page said breakthroughs and non-incremental changes are key. He ended up questioning why tech giants like Apple don’t use their vast resources toward these goals. According to Page, “You may say that Apple only does a very, very small number of things, and that’s working pretty well for them. But I find that unsatisfying,” adding that the “crazy things” investors worry about spending money on are ultimately the most substantial. Examples given are YouTube, Chrome, and Android with Page saying “if you’re not doing some things that are crazy, then you’re doing the wrong things.”

When discussing new products, Wired specifically asked if Google’s latest social networking endeavor, Google+, was a result of competition with Facebook, but Page dismissed the idea by saying the following:

It’s not the way I think about it. And, yeah, [Facebook is] a company that’s strong in that space. But they’re also doing a really bad job on their products. For us to succeed, is it necessary for some other company to fail? No. We’re actually doing something different.
Although, Page's comments make sense, each company will end up doing what they feel will help them the most. We'll have to wait and see what future plans tech giants have in store for us by being patient.

Yes everyone please innovate for us like we innovated by purchasing YouTube, making a phone OS, and creating a web browser that was not the 1st nor 2nd or 3rd, to name a few things they have done. Without ideas cleaned up google would just be Yahoo mail with larger data file transfers. Everything based on competition. I remember yahoo being a big search engine till someone came alone to compete with them. Wonder who that was.

When I get my hands on some google glasses then you can talk about innovating. Till then do what every other company does and just don't admit you took ideas from people and just say its new and revolutionary.

Just proves why google are doing better than Apple with their phones. Apple are sueing everyone where Google are trying to make new stuff to keep the customers happy.
I know where my money is going. Back to me in a new device NOT to help some stupid lawsuit.

Like the article outlines, no one has produced anything revolutionary in some time. Apple, Google etc..
I tend to agree that companies should focus more on there own products and not who is copying them. Be flattered and make the next move first AGAIN. Stop crying about the copying and suing everyone under the sun. Too much wasted $$ ends up in the hands of lawyers..silly to me. Innovate and move on. Let your product speak for itself..hope thats not a thing of the past or is it??

The above quote has been nominated for the "Most Stupid Comment in Human History" award.

      Where does Google innovate?

      Developed technology for self-driving cars
      Google +
      Google TV
      Google Replay
      Basically everything in Gmail
      Street View
      Phone Calls from Gmail
      Google AdWords
      Google Glasses
      Google Maps

Let's not forget innovations that have spawned as a result of Google Android

      Multi-window on Android (true multi-tasking)
Pushing the limits of hardware on Phones well beyond anything Apple can offer
      Project butter
      Software buttons
The fact that Android is evolving faster than Apple
Total integration with RELIABLE Google services as opposed to terrible Apple services.

I can go on, but I think I have made my point. What has Apple Innovated as of late?

Rehashing the same design for their phones
      iOS Maps
      Different colors on their iPods
      Lawsuits

Apple has done a wonderful job innovating lawsuits. New ways to sue people all around the world.

Sheesh, it reeks like an ocean of urine in here.

(Quit trolling about Apple vs. Google and the merits of their "innovations," everybody).

On topic: Yeah, the technological industry needs more innovations.

Just like the mining industry needs more mother lodes, the timber industry needs more trees, and I need more hours in a day. It's quite the truism--the industry cannot function if stagnant.
