  • Apple Rumored to have cut iPhone 5 Component Orders due to Weak Demand

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, which claims the news comes from sources familiar with the matter, Apple cut “roughly half” of its orders for the iPhone 5’s 4-inch screen and initiated a drawdown on other components orders for the January to March quarter. The cutback in part orders was in part due to “weaker-than-expected” demand for Apple’s latest iPhone.

It’s unclear as to what is to blame for the reduction but ongoing rumors point to the possible introduction of a cheaper model to the iPhone line sometime in 2013. According to a corresponding article from Nikkei, Apple’s revised orders have prompted Japanese LCD makers to look for business elsewhere. Apple is currently sourcing the 4-inch Retina displays used in the iPhone 5 from Japanese manufactures Japan Display and Sharp as well as South Korea’s LG Display.

Overall, this doesn’t seem like too much of a surprise as supply of the iPhone 5 finally caught up to demand in mid-December when a number of international Online Apple Stores listed the smartphone as being in stock for the first time since its launch at the end of September. Ultimately though, we’ll still need to wait and see if the report is correct and what the exact reason behind a cutdown in orders might be, if there has been one in the first place.

Same here why make it longer and not wider but hey I'm just a consumer.
My thoughts exactly! Am currently running LockInfo for widget control and it's a great feature! If one Dev can think of this why can't apple? Doesn't seem unstable and doesn't suck the batt on my 4S!

Pretty sure Tim Cook would appreciate a widgets on the Lockscreen / Homescreen instead of unlocking & launching the app. Have also changed up the Keyboard via Color Keyboard and works fine!

I agree the 5 should be wider too!

I believed that what Apple need is to make some changes to the user interface of the iPhone. I own an iPhone 5 and its interface is boring already. People get tire of the same thing and its limitations.

No empire in history has - yet - been able to predict and prevent its own downfall. Apple won't see the train approaching.

The lack of customization is a serious problem for many folks, such as disabled people that rely on certain Cydia tweaks. I don't share planetbeing's optimism about an iOS 6 JB. It's no use if JBs take 8-12 months to produce. That's just too long. The next model phone is already out by then. I understand that some people love their iPhone even without a jailbreak, but those people (as a percentage) are becoming less and less. The S4 or newer Nexus products are going to look quite tempting in a few months time.
I agree with your jailbreak outlook, I posted a very similar comment a few months back. I don't want to sound ungrateful for what the devs have done for us in the past, i am as big a fan as anybody, but the rosy picture some of them are painting about the jailbreak scene is just flat out unrealistic, and is more propaganda then anything else.

As you said, a JB being produced 8-12 months after the release of a iphone will be useless to many, and if this time period continues for every release...it is defeat. Game over. The jailbreak scene will slowly die off, with only the hardcore modders remaining. Based on his comments about how he enjoys a smaller JB scene, I don't know if Planetbeing would see this as a bad thing.

Planetbeing's justification for not releasing his supposed working, legal jailbreak contradicts itself, in that he has stated he believes that 6.1 will break the supposed exploit(s) used by the JB, yet one of his reasons for not releasing a JB is to save it for 6.1 and beyond...This does not make sense. It would be better to have a JB on 6.0.1(2) then to not have one... at all. Does ANYONE not agree? If he does have a JB, waiting for 6.1 is a MASSIVE gamble, and is either foolish, selfish, or both.

I can't agree with you on switching to a Samsung though...that would not happen. I will take my stock iPhone over any Samsung, any day. And as far as your comment regarding the percentage of iPhone users enjoying a stock iPhone decreasing...well that's just wrong. The iPhone has the biggest market share it has ever had...ever.

The niche community here on Modmyi tends to greatly overvalue their importance to Apple, and their impact on Apples bottom line. I never go to work or go to the bar or to the movies and hear people saying how much they dislike their iPhone....ever.

If apple makes it easier for consumers to jailbreak, I am pretty sure they will be great demand for iPhone 5. No widgets , no flash , no extra features compared to Android will soon becomes unpopular .

I agree, but widgets just drain the battery(im not one for widgets)and flash is outdated. Even google is or has moved to HTML 5. But I would like to see some more customization to the UI. I thought it was cool when they opened up the customizing sounds for mail and all the others.

And with the equally bugy IOS6 you might as well wait for the next iphone and have a newer hopefully fixed IOS. If its not fixed and the iPhone 5S isn't better then there is always the always better than iPhone Galaxy S* series of smartphones, which is actually the smart way to go. They are better and cheaper so why not get one of them like everyone else.

Go have a read of some other news sites. They are saying the iPhone is over and Androids are the way to go.
I'm agreeing with them. The iPhone isn't user friendly and buggy and more expensive so why not go for the better phone.
      Good luck.

      2) I already have. You all will too, even if you're still currently in denial. It's only a matter of time ;-)
Already did, ran a rooted JB GS3 for a few weeks. Tried multiple roms. At the end of the day, hated it and traded it for a 4s till the iPhone 5 came out

Why buy anything then? I mean hell why would I buy a new car is a new one comes out in a year.

I just wish companies would realize people don't want them to improve there products.

Seriously though, apple isn't forcing you to spend money. Sorry if they don't wait a full year to improve a product. Personally I'd rather see full refreshes yearly and the "s" models in between

THANK YOU! Finally someone that understands! While this site is strictly for jail breaking, don't think for one second this isn't the minority, and I mean great minority, Apple would not care if all the jailbreakers switched. For every 1 person that I know that has a jailbroken iDevice, I know 5-10 that are stock and are madly in love with it. And it's not for the fact people don't know about jailbreaking. I talk with people daily and they don't simply put the don't feel the "need" to. They know it's not illegal and all the other things people used to think back in the 3GS days with the lawsuits and laws passing. They just simply say their is nothing they will gain. Some users on here think Apple will suffer greatly without us... Sorry to burst your bubble, but they don't give a rats a** about losing us. If you don't like an iPhone without a jailbreak, buy an android or don't complain. Love the phone for the phone. Not the jailbreak.

I think it has to do with the iPod Touch 5. It uses the exact same screen. The problem is that they put two year-old hardware in a brand new, premium-priced iPod, released a new iPad that doesnt cost much more, and then expected the iPod to sell well.

The new iPod simply isn't worth the price, and the iPhone is still too expensive.

I make themes for iOS and even I'm now telling people to go with Android!

people are NOT switching to Android for cost reasons !! you cant be that ignorant. why would anybody (myself included) switch from an iPhone 4, 4S or 5 for a less expensive Android phone? that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

people ARE leaving iOS because its boring, plain and simple. the last 3 iPhones are essentially the exact same phone but with very minimal spec increases whereas the update from the Galaxy S II to the Galaxy S III was a mile apart.

If I was in charge at apple I would offer users what they want, more choices, more flexibility and more freedom.

I would shock the world and produce the iPhone "Note" a 5" apple Phablet. the thing would sell like crazy and I myself would not pass one by.

We are probably all lucky you are not in charge TBH.

You will be hoping the Galaxy S4 is another huge step for mankind...would hate for it to fall short & miss the mark...

Android just doesn't cut it in terms of usability and stability.
And Samsung's abysmal Pentile displays are MISERABLE.
OK, Apple goofed with the i-5 - but when they sort bigger screens with a usable aspect ratio, demand will start increasing again.

you're not very honest are you? a JB iPhone is far short of stock Android. if Samsung's pentile display is so horrible and you think iOS is more stable blah blah blah why do you own all these Android devices?
