  • Dell to Launch iPad Rival "Streak" This Week

In case you missed it during a busy twenty-four hours of Apple and iDevice news, Dell will officially take a shot at Apple's tablet computer dominance this week with the launch of its 5-inch Streak. The tablet will run you $299 with a two-year AT&T contract and nearly double at $549 without a contract.

Although we've known about the forthcoming Dell tablet for months, the reality of its arrival is only now setting in. And according to the Wall Street Journal, Apple shouldn't disregard the new offering due to the runaway popularity of the iPad. The WSJ, in fact, has dubbed the Streak the "the first major competitor" Apple has seen in the tablet marketplace.

Interestingly enough, it's being billed as a tablet despite its rather dinky five-inch screen. Additionally, it can make phone calls, delivers built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 5-megapixel camera, microSD-expandable memory up to 32GB, turn-by-turn navigation from Google, and available 3G for e-mail, texting, instant messages, and voice calls. The Streak will run Android 1.6.

Preorders for the Dell Streak officially begin tomorrow, August 12th.

For all of ya naysayers out there I doubt any of you have actually seen or used the device. I have and I can tell you it's solid. 1.6 is a problem but they are, I hear, pushing out an update later in the year.

In any case I think it's going to do pretty damn well.

I would buy this if it was less advertised as a phone/tablet and more as a multimedia device. A 5 inch screen is acceptable in a gaming or video capable device meant for car trips and such, but for a phone/minitablet, I just don't see anyone wanting it. It is a cool device, but it was poorly thought out.

Why is every touchscreen device an ipad knockoff or ipad rival? This is a phone, if anything its an iPhone rival.

Lolcats, you're an idiot! Your post has nothing to do with the topic. All you care about is attention. Jailbreaking an iphone is not a techno-feat anymore and that post does not make you any smarter than average.

On topic: That device wont sell at all. Making a bigger bulkier phone doesn't make it a tablet. Apple is the only one that gets that. It's too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet.

Lolcats is a douche. As for the Streak...plastic hardware from, well....Dell...and the fact that it's running a version of Android that's a year old?! That's like buying a new Dell laptop with Windows ME installed.

ohh.. and the streak is too big, with older cpu and os. i think it would have done better perhaps last year.

What? The previous two releases of the iPhone were plastic, and plenty of people gobbled those up...

If they put WinMo on it instead of Android and added a nifty little keyboard they could call it the HTC Athena.....

Yuk! A Dell??? I honestly dislike Dell and the ****** overseas customer service that they provide. Plus this tablet looks bulky and ugly.
