  • Apple Loses Close Race with Google on 2012 Patent Acquisitions

And the winner is Google... by a nose. According to figures released this week by IFI Claims Patent Services, Google edged out Apple in 2012 in the race to secure as much intellectual property as possible.

If you don't think there's actually a race going on, you may want to reconsider that view. With patent claims and intellectual property rights translating to big business for the tech world these days, little by little the biggest industry momentum is going to those with the most valuable patents in their arsenal.

Of the top 50 patent grabbers of 2012, Google placed No. 21 overall with 1,151 patents. Apple secured just 15 fewer patents (1,136).

For Google to hit the top 50 patenting companies in 2012, it must have been making significant efforts in filing for a few years, given the long delays that often happen between filing a patent application and receiving a granted patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The biggest name in patent acquisition last year, however, took home more patents than Google and Apple combined. In 2012, IBM claimed 6,478 patents.

Underdog? This is what I mean by some of you guys are naive. You base everything you know on the few articles you read, you don't see the big picture. You guys overreact to lawsuits but don't open your tunnel vision enough to realize this is what businesses do its not just apple, literally every company rips off others etc.

True Apple just takes advantage of it too much.

I wish companies could NOT use newly acquired patents in lawsuits for a period of time after they've been awarded and certainly NOT against devices that were using them BEFORE the patent was issued.

No people on here just thinks apple does it more than others because they ONLY check an apple forum. They aren't going to see who everyone else sues
