  • 2013 PC Growth Will Be 'Limited' Due to Strong iPad Growth

Today's leading tablets have taken a clear and devastating bite out of PC sales for the last few years. With regard to 2013, that trend is expected to continue.

According to new industry forecasts published on Monday, global PC growth may be limited to just 2% this year, mostly due to the explosion in iPad adoption. The paltry gains expected can, to a degree, be attributed to interest in Windows 8. But the operating system won't be sufficient to stop the overall bleeding caused by the mobile revolution.

Wu does, however, see the PC market becoming more of "an Asia-Pacific game" with Lenovo, Asustek, and Samsung "likely to show the strongest growth and continue to gain share on players like Hewlett-Packard and Dell.”

Im wondering when we will get a Mac or PC that is the size of a tablet. They say the Surface Pro is supposed to be just that but I have yet to see it. I know the ModBookPro looks pretty sweet but that price tag is ridiculous. Waiting game continues..

The Pc industry will be slow due to Tablet sales as a whole.

Now this I don't understand. A tablet can only do a fraction of what a full computer can do.

I guess it all comes down to this: many people own a computer in order to surf the internet or read the news. Maybe tweet or Facebook a little on the side. That's it.

A computer is an awesome, powerful tool for organization. A person's ability to organize is what makes them smart. Not owning a PC may not hurt you directly, but it certainly limits what your brain is capable of.

PC growth limited due to iPads? really? IF and that's a big 'IF' PC growth will be "limited" it certainly wont be because of the iPad. there's more than a billion PC's in the world and a few million iDevices aint gonna change that--and certainly not the iPad with its ever shrinking market share and the fact that there are more people who own smart phones than tablets. Android alone runs on a billion phones so if anything is slowing down the sale of PCs its smartphones not a tablet.

Open a dictionary and look up the word "research" then do it! Flapping your gums doesn't make you smart, in fact, flapping your gums about things in which you haven't a clue makes you look stupid. Your rationale is similar to me saying that car sales are slowing down the sale of dump trucks. If you think smart phones are in the same category as PC's and Tablets, then you have some serious issues.

And if you think PC sales have not been on a downward spiral since the introduction of the iPad and subsequent competing tablets, than you have been living under a rock. Let me guess, you have an android phone, are between the ages of 19 to 25 and are an avid PC gamer. Yes, there are billions of PCs in the world, but we are not talking about existing numbers, we are talking about "growth", understand? With the cheap parts in todays average PC, existing numbers are not going to sustain the industry as PCs are replaced with newer models or tablets as they age. The industry needs a constant uptick in growth each and every quarter for it to be viable in the long term. Tablets are stealing that market, and for the other poster that thinks PCs make you smart, well, I think your statement alone proves that to be wrong, because if your thought process on this matter is what you consider intelligent, then PCs actually make you dumb! I run 2 business, and the only thing I use my Mac and PCs for these days is software development, everything else, INCLUDING organization of my life and work are done on an iPad Mini and an Amazon Kindle, so I think your theory just went out the window... thank you and move along!

If you think tablets are in the same category as PCs, you share those same serious issues. Pot, meet Kettle.

So then why do tablets effect the sales of computers but smart phones don't? People buy tablets instead of computers simply because a lot of people don't really need a computer. Tablets are plenty powerful.

Is that a joke? Tablets are plenty powerful... as tablets, not PC replacements. Nobody is getting rid of PCs to buy tablets, most consumers are adding tablets to their growing collection of electronics.

Unlike tablets, which have a 2-year lifespan thanks to planned obsolescence, PCs last far longer. I am typing this on a Toshiba Qosmio laptop that is already over 4 years old. With its quad-core i7, 256GB SSD, and 8GB RAM, I won't be needing to replace this laptop anytime soon, but my 1st generation iPad on the other hand has already been excluded from the latest version of iOS (a big FU goes to Apple for that). There are already many apps and games that I cannot install unless I want to go out and drop another $500 on a new iPad. I'll pass. For that money, I can buy a sufficient PC that will last at least 5-6 years. For the price of the high-end iPad, I can buy a notebook. I need neither because my 4+ year old laptop is already far more powerful than is necessary and should last at least another 2-4 years.

Once the tablet novelty wears off and current PCs start to show their age, PC sales will return to normal just as they always do. Do a little research yourself and look at the last 10 years of PC sales trends.

I don't really think the iPad is eating into PC sales as much as the fact that most people already have a PC. Only those who need high-end performance will upgrade so quickly.
