Apple’s latest operating system, OS X Mountain Lion, is now the most widely used operating system on Mac computers according to data from a firm known as Net Applications. Above, a graph shows the popularity between OS X Moutain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, and Leopard.
Mac OS X Leopard has been on a steady decline, now running on under 10% of Macs, however Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion are all meeting at about the same spot on the graph at the end of December 2012, sharing close to 30% of Mac share, each, in order to build the rest of the Mac user base. OS X Mountain Lion, of course, being the highest of them all at 32%.
The graph also shows us how quickly OS X Mountain Lion was adopted just after its initial release in July of 2012. As soon as August hit, the increase in users has been steady up to December of 2012.
One thing that we can see from the graph is how reluctant Mac users are to upgrade their software. OS X Mountain Lion’s 32% share of all Macs in use today is a large number, however it’s not a whole lot – only about a third of Mac users. With all of the new features introduced in OS X Mountain Lion, it seems like that number would be anecdotally higher.
