  • The iPad in the Office

As part of the Apple earnings conference call that Michael Essany reported on today, Apple COO Tim Cook noted the "amazing" demand for the iPad, which he also described as "incredible." Believe it or not, the iPad has not followed the expected early adopter curve, which sees enthusiasts, the often-derided "fanbois," first in line for a new product long before it gains popularity in the general market. The iPad, however, is taking off among many sectors, including - somewhat unexpectedly - big business.

Apple's second-in command said that over half of the 100 largest companies in the US are now using the iPad. Cook asserted that it was unprecedented that the iPad is "not following [the] typical early adopter curve and taking a long time to cross into the mainstream." The research and consulting firm ITIC backs this assessment up, finding in a study that 23% of corporate IT managers are already using iPads, and 18% plan to buy one within the year. The Apple Consumer and Enterprise Survey also showed that 82% of companies are boosting support for iOS devices, allowing iPads and iPhones to access enterprise data and services.

Wells Fargo, which waited a couple of years before allowing its employees to use iPhones, is already buying iPads for its employees. According to a post on PadGadget, IT managers decided to allow staff to use iPads in their enterprise after only a few weeks of evaluation. Similarly, as PadGadget reports, Daimler AG, the maker of the Mercedes Benz, is letting its employees use iPads to access email, approve shipping orders and access its automobile financing applications. Audi is also mentioned as another iPad adopter, among others in the automotive industry, the airline industry, the healthcare industry and others.

One reason why this is good news for iOS users everywhere is the well-known "network effect," where something becomes more valuable as more people use it. Millions of iPads out there, whether in business, education or in the home, means more and better apps, a wider selection of peripherals and acessories, and motivation for Apple to make serious improvements in security, which is crucial for business users.

I have purchased several iPads for my company already. Since using the iPads for showing potential clients our portfolio, our sales have gone through the roof. Our closing rate is up from 62% to 81% with plenty of those people signing right on the spot. I think the iPad has earned well over 260k in contracts thus far. I am excited to get more iPads in the hands of our sales force.

there is definitely a place for them, but most employees just want them as toys. Drives me nuts. Also kinda sucks from a support standpoint... last thing IT wants is to have iTunes be mandated on everyone's pc... that's just inviting a horrible failure.

We were in the low 60s which I thought was already good. I built a nice keynote presentation for all my sales guys along with over 15 GBs of hi-res photos of our work on each iPad. There has also been a 3D rendering app in the app store that allows my sales reps to give a client instant project visualization.

In the past 6 weeks we have had several 30k to 50k projects sign on the spot, which is not typical at all. Usually we have several follow up meetings. People seem very excited to see the device and are taken back by how we use it.

The iPad makes our company look like we are on the cutting edge of our industry. If you can't tell already, I'm so excited about the coming months!

We are in the healthcare industry and just rolled out our first batch of iPads to my sales team. User adoption to web based tools, applications, and resources has exploded. Much concern over the iPad/iPhone has been it's security model in comparison to RIMS and the lack of a BES type setup. I know that Wells Fargo is using Good Technology as a middleware solution right now and has been very happy with it. We shall see how our full rollout goes once iOS4 gets launched for the iPad

I asked my boss if I could use my ipad at work and got fired for inappropriate language to a superior. Guess it mustve been the wrong time of the month to ask my woman boss about a poorly named apple product.
      It sucks but its hilarious.

You made me laugh so hard I choked on my hotpocked.

I expect to see alot more business related apps pop up that are designed speciafically for the iPad.

I wonder if Apple (some day) would even let a single company have their iPads come stock with "custom" apps preloaded onto the iPad.

ie: Specific to that companies day to day.
