  • Redesigned Fifth-Generation iPad Expected in March

According to Japanese blog Mac Otakara, Apple is supposedly in the middle of preparing a thinner and lighter fifth-generation iPad model ahead of a March unveiling. This would be shooting for a release just five months after the most recent version was released in October. Citing people who claim to be familiar with the issue, the Japanese blog claims the 9.7-inch tablet will surface in March with a new look more in line with the iPad mini.

As far as details go, the exact dimensions of the purported iPad weren’t revealed but the sources did expect the tablet to be thinner and lighter than its current iteration. This seems to be the case with most Apple products as designs in general have been trending toward shrinking the device while cramming in as much technology as possible. With the third and fourth-generation iPad, the chassis was actually slightly thicker than its predecessor as more internal space was required to hold the unit’s Retina display.

Although the rumor fits in well with recent whispers of Apple moving to an aggressive half-year product refresh cycle, the company usually works with a year-long rotation for its iDevice lines since their respective introductions. The only exception to that so far has been the fourth-generation iPad which debuted half a year after its predecessor. No mention was made of the 9.7-inch model’s internal specifications, but the publication did point out the iPad mini was already in the works. As of right now, rumor has it that the smaller tablet will be fitting an all-new 7.9-inch Retina display over hand-me-down specs such as the A6X currently found in the full-size iPad. No prospective launch timeline has been established though.

Ultimately, we’ll just have to be patient to see what Apple is up to.

What are you guy talking about a 6 month cycle for? The iPad 4 was a minor spec incress it was not a new version. This will be 12 months since the last ipad generation. Ipad 3 and 4 are the same generation.

That's a false statement. They have different 'generation names' in all printed materials. The next one will indeed be called '5th gen'. That's irrefutable.

How dare apple not make us wait 12 months to have new technology. I mean what kind of POS company would update there products when the technology is current rather than waiting for it to be 6 months old??

I am appalled of the mere thought of the ability to purchase a new iPad before the last one is 1 year old. Lmao

People are so silly. "I just got mine are you kidding" as if everyone buys an iPad each year.

Let's assume you are on a 1 a year budget. I know I am. I usually sell off the old to buy the new. There are two advantages to a 6 month refresh.

      1. Your product is that much newer when you want to sell it and people like that.

      2. If your on a 1. Year budget then instead of updating to something is 2x faster you'll be updating to something 4x faster (ussually with each release apple makes the newer product twice as fast)

If your like me then you'll probably sell your iPad to get a new one anyway. So the upgrade coat is minimal

Besides I'm all about he iPad mini anyway. Love the size and weight

No, they call it the 2012, 2013 Ford F150, etc.

Yes, but it is still an F-150. So call it the 2013 iPad.

I said that exact thing several months ago about the iPhone when everybody was arguing about its new name! Unfortunately, the iPad 3 & 4 were in the same production year so that won't work....

Yeah it's really stupid they stopped using the generation numbers after iPad 2. I will always refer to them as their gen numbers. I think Apple didn't like the idea of gen numbers for the iPad being out of synch with the iPhones. Still it's the iPad 4 not "The iPad"....

it makes perfect sense since they're lagging behind the competition. apple can no longer offer minimal upgrades once every 12 months.

Following this logic, a two-year cycle should make more money. Releasing updates faster certainly doesn't do a thing to existing models. People who whine about this buy iDevices for the bling factor, not to use them.

Pads are rectangles of absorbent material that you stick to the inside of your underwear. Some have extra material on the sides (called "wings") that fold over the edges of your underwear to better hold the pad in place and prevent leakage. Sometimes, pads are called sanitary pads or sanitary napkins. Nothing like a pad that can also play music!
