  • Redesigned Fifth-Generation iPad Expected in March

According to Japanese blog Mac Otakara, Apple is supposedly in the middle of preparing a thinner and lighter fifth-generation iPad model ahead of a March unveiling. This would be shooting for a release just five months after the most recent version was released in October. Citing people who claim to be familiar with the issue, the Japanese blog claims the 9.7-inch tablet will surface in March with a new look more in line with the iPad mini.

As far as details go, the exact dimensions of the purported iPad weren’t revealed but the sources did expect the tablet to be thinner and lighter than its current iteration. This seems to be the case with most Apple products as designs in general have been trending toward shrinking the device while cramming in as much technology as possible. With the third and fourth-generation iPad, the chassis was actually slightly thicker than its predecessor as more internal space was required to hold the unit’s Retina display.

Although the rumor fits in well with recent whispers of Apple moving to an aggressive half-year product refresh cycle, the company usually works with a year-long rotation for its iDevice lines since their respective introductions. The only exception to that so far has been the fourth-generation iPad which debuted half a year after its predecessor. No mention was made of the 9.7-inch model’s internal specifications, but the publication did point out the iPad mini was already in the works. As of right now, rumor has it that the smaller tablet will be fitting an all-new 7.9-inch Retina display over hand-me-down specs such as the A6X currently found in the full-size iPad. No prospective launch timeline has been established though.

Ultimately, we’ll just have to be patient to see what Apple is up to.

I know many will whine about the "new" mini when it's released with the retina, A6x ect ect and say that's the mini they should of released first. Yeah sure it was but it will be an awesome little iPad and I will for sure buy at east one to add to my OiPad and current mini. I will most likely pass my other iPad onto my brothers family and pic up another iPad of some type so every one wins.

I just cant see any reason why Apple would be switching to a 6 month refresh cycle. It makes no sense.

Thats the problem with Apple now. They are greedy and want it all.
Because of that they will loose it all and it'll all be their own fault.

So it gives the user more to choose from as far as features and stuff go. Like android. If you want an android phone how many are there to choose from? I don't like the 6 month cycle either

Yep. You beat me to it! A 6month refresh cycle is more in keeping with other major hardware companies. Doesn't surprise me a bit - but I don't think it will work for Apple the way they think it might. Apple products are built so well they serve people real well for a year. We Apple people aren't getting bored in 6 months nor are our phones as unstable as Android. So I think this idea will backfire on Apple in the final analysis.

What is it going to be called? The next new iPad? The new, new iPad.
I'm guessing it'll be something original. "The iPad".

It will emulate the current iPad mini as far as external hardware. Hoping that they make the bezel just as thin on the sides as well. I look at my iPad VS my iPad mini and the bezel is ugly to me. Other than that i like the iPad 4 with Retina display. Can't wait to see the new one.

Let's see, no jailbreaks and thinner devices every 6 months with no new features. There's nothing to see here folks! Move on now!

"The iPad" is a perfect name for it. You don't see Ford calling the new F-150 the "New, new, new, (insert 45 more) F-150" do you?

If the past hold true, it wont hurt them a bit. Did you forget that last year Apple released the iPad 3 a couple months after Christmas when many folks got the iPad 2 for the holiday. I'm sure they felt like you after owning the iPad 2 for 3 months and a new model pops out. I will feel the same if they release a new iMac this year since I got my new iMac I waited over a year for a few days ago.

After looking at the differences between the 3rd and 4th gen, that 6 month release cycle made sense. The 3rd gen model only worked on three sets of carriers for LTE vs the 4th gen with multiple (add in the international LTE radio like with the iPhone 5). It also had a new processor and updated specs (cameras, lightning port, etc) to go along with it.

Unless they have an entirely new processor and better spec set, having a 5th gen only 6 months after the 4th gen doesn't make much sense.
