If you have ever wanted to look at the online status of Apple’s services, such as iCloud and iMessage, Apple would show you whether or not they were down or fully functional from their System Status page on their Web site. The only problems with the interface were the lack of graphical information and the limited information.
Apple has today updated the look of their System Status page on their Web site (follow this link) so that the information is much easier to follow. Above is a look at the new interface. The new interface is slick and shows much more information at a glance than its predecessor.
The new interface will display either a green rounded square or an amber triangle to display the status of certain services. The interface is separated into three different sections: Services, Stores, and iCloud.
Under the Services section, you will find the online status of the following items:
- Apple ID
- Game Center
Under the Stores section, you will find the online status of the following items:
- App Store
- iTunes Store
- Apple Online Store
- Mac App Store
- iBooks Store
- Photo Print Products
Under the iCloud section, you will find the online status of the following items:
- Photo Stream
- iTunes in the Cloud
- Documents in the Cloud
- iTunes Match
- iPhoto Journals
- Find my iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac
- Bookmarks and iCloud Tabs
- Find My Friends
- Account and Sign in
- Back to My Mac
- Storage Upgrades
When you scroll down just a little bit from the System Status interface, you will find a timeline that actually outlines any outages that may have occurred over a period of time:
The new timeline allows users to scroll side-to-side within the box to view the dates. To the left, information spells out for the user just how many people were affected by any recent outages and when they occurred in terms of clock time, not just the date.
The changes are likely because of the fact that iCloud, Stores, and Services are becoming major dependencies for Apple’s operating systems and products. With nearly every major software update, Apple makes it so that iCloud can be used to do something different. With more and more services being added, the simple, vague “Users may not be able to access…” just won’t suffice and more information has become necessary as we continue to depend on these services to use our devices.
While the new interface will make it much easier to see if some of our services from Apple are down for maintenance when they don’t work properly, the user must still visit the Web site to get access to the information. With the new design, it would be awesome to see Apple release some kind of application in the App Store so we can access the information more easily on the go.
How do you like the updated interface?
