  • Google Maps Application Already Top Free App in App Store

Following Apple’s bad luck with their Maps application, users have anticipated Google launching their own Google Maps application in the App Store for a long time. Now that it has been out in the App Store for free for just one night, the application has already skyrocketed to first place in the top free App Store applications.

Google Maps is followed in the App Store’s top free applications section by Fun Run - Multiplayer Race and YouTube – another one of Google’s free applications that was removed from iOS in iOS 6.

How has Google Maps become the new top free application in the App Store so quickly? The first reason being that it has been downloaded so many times in such a short time. Another reason has to do with the fact that there have been more than 10,000 five-star ratings and positive reviews since the application’s launch last night. There is also the occasional disappointed reviewer that comments on the fact of there being no iPad-optimized version of the application.

One thing that can certainly be said about the Google Maps application is that it completely blows the iOS 5 version of Google Maps out of the water. The same can be said for Google's YouTube application. With more features and a sleeker interfaces, Google has managed to out-do the once-native iOS applications and make these services even more wonderful to use on an iOS device.

If you haven't downloaded Google's own Google Maps application just yet, the Google Maps application is free and can be downloaded from the App Store from this link.

Thanks Google , great job with this app and maps in general. No GPS or no other maps move so fast as Google.
Last week a bridge opened in our neighborhood and now is on Google maps. That is great.

For those like myself who haven't had any problems or trouble with Apple Maps, it's the better option. This new Google Maps doesn't integrate with the contact list nor offer any voice control options. It's great for those that have trouble with Apple Maps though.

Apple Maps is a waste of springboard space for me in UK, unlike Google maps, just waiting for a jailbreak tweak to allow me to set Google maps as the default app, just like the jailbreak scene did with Chrome over Safari

If you're waiting for a jailbreak tweak, then I assume you're already jailbroken. You don't have to have that "waste of springboard space" on your home screen if you're jailbroken. There are numerous tweaks to hide the application icon.

If he is jailbroken, he can even change the GMaps icon to the iOS Maps icon if he wanted! It just requires a little iFile magic!!!

This Google Maps is INSANELY GOOD! From the moment I opened it to test a turn by turn everything was placed exactly where I expected. Even though completely different than their orig Apple version - it is so intuitive to use. Every button you see takes you to next logical step. It predicts addresses you're looking for whether you've ever searched it before or not. But if you look up something at home on Google it's loaded and ready to go on ur phone when u get in the car. The voice speaks in a very pleasing relaxed natural tone. Easy to hear in car noise.

If you have AT&T Navigator for $9 a month.. Get rid of it. Waste of $.. This is better and free.

Nice job, Google!! And good for u, Apple, to not fight this. People will actually be swayed from Android simply by this app - exclusive to iPhone!

It's okay. Both are good in their respective way in my opinion.

Both of what? There could be many things you're talking about there. :-)

I'm not saying the Google Maps icon is bad, but I like the old maps icon better. I guess I'll just give it time for me to get use to.

Couldn't agree more. Google map may have more data and work better for others. But for people like me that have had no issues. iOS maps looks better. Feels better and most importantly integrates with contacts, Siri and lock screen.

However, if it didn't get me to correct destinations like some others experience I would be all over google maps.

I would also like to know if it is possible. I have edited the app store to where I was able to download it, and edited the app itself to allow 5.0.1, but it still crashes. I assume I'll need to update, but I would love a fix in the meantime.

You may disagree with apple switching off of google maps as their stock app, however google has had the power to put turn by turn navigation and held back and therefore held apple back. Apple switching was the push that forced google to upgrade their maps.

Well... Here's my take on the new app.

      The Good:

      1) Notification Center integration is nice! Wish more navigation apps would do that.

      2) The interface is different, but it is pretty learnable.

      3) Finally, we have the address/POI search support that predicts for you. That's a good thing. Hopefully the SDK will allow increased POI searching on other apps that use Google's mapping.

      The bad:

      1) No iPad support. As expected for Google, iPad support is lacking in another app upon launch. Must have been a rush job. Expect the universal app in 2-3 months...

      2) The turn-by-turn directions timing can be off by a few seconds. Literally I was only instructed to turn beyond halfway on multiple intersections. Not good! (Yes, yes, not a great idea to solely reliant on GPS for driving, just explaining differences from experience).

      3) No bicycle directions. Google has a really good set of bike routes, but fails to utilize it on iOS... There's a few free apps that will do this, and one even uses Google.

I have not had any lag at all from the new Google app with regard to turn by turn directions. It always gives me my next move at least 3 to 5 seconds before I need it and I've used it extensively the last few days. There must be something unique about your situation. Has anybody else experienced this? I even tested this side-by-side with my tom-tom. And the Google maps app was actually a split-second ahead of tom-tom's commands.

Then, you've intrigued me with the cycle app. I have CycleMeter. Is that the one you're talking about?

There's a few of them that use it IIRC. I have used Maps+ for my biking directions.
