  • T-Mobile Hopeful that Obtaining iPhone Will Bring Back Lost Subscribers

As many T-Mobile customers have jumped ship turning to rival carriers to be able to use the iPhone, the wireless carrier’s recent efforts to obtain Apple’s immensely popular smartphone from next year have paid off. The wireless carrier is clearly hoping that this move will help it bring back lot subscribers. Chief Executive John Legere wants to see Apple’s flagship smartphone make a positive impact on the carrier’s subscription numbers by 2013, something that is likely to happen.

According to Legere, “it is an aggressive target but we think it is possible.” The wireless carrier has clearly been struggling without the iPhone as it lost 510,000 customers during the first quarter of 2013 than 557,000 customers during the second quarter, followed by another 492,000 customers in the third quarter. For those of you who are too lazy to do the math, that’s roughly 1.56 million customers lost in nine months. Although not all customers who left T-Mobile jumped ship for the iPhone, the device was certainly playing a big part in the losses the carrier faced. Legere said “it was very clear that a certain number of customers wouldn’t come to the store if we didn’t have the iPhone. There was a definite impact.”

Apple’s iPhone has been making such a big impact in the industry that T-Mobile has been unofficially trying to appeal to unlocked iPhone customers. The carrier went as far as providing iPhone 5 micro-SIMs, despite not carrying the handset, and has been hard at work upgrading its HSPA+ network to support the iPhone in many different areas. Now that the wireless carrier has inked the deal with Apple to carry the iPhone in 2013, it isn’t a surprise for the company to be hopeful in regaining some of its many lost subscribers.

If they still offer truly unlimited data next year when they get the iPhone, I may switch over then. I'll have to see how their coverage is in my area first though.

T-Mobile's customer service is good and unlocked AT&T phones already work in most areas. I don't see the point in buying new phones anymore when there are so many inexpensive used iPhones that are in great condition being sold just because someone wants the latest generation.
