  • Xbox May Rival Apple TV with New Set-Top Box

Microsoft is going to give Apple a run for its money in the set-top TV box arena. And it plans to use the juggernaut Xbox brand to do so. That's according to a new report derived from sources in the know.

This purportedly "affordable" system will provide access to Xbox entertainment services, including streaming media and some degree of gaming. Although little else is known for the time being, the set-top box may be somehow related to to the next-gen Xbox console due out in 2013.

"The device will run on the core components of Windows 8 and support casual gaming titles rather than full Xbox games typically found on a dedicated console," The Verge reports. "Although hardware specifications aren't fully locked down, we understand Microsoft will use a chipset to enable an "always on" device that boots quickly and resumes to near-instant access to TV and entertainment devices."

When asked for comment on the rumor, Microsoft issued the following statement:

"Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention."
In other words, they didn't deny the market introduction of this rumored forthcoming device.

      It's Xbox, not X-Box. That's like saying I-pod.

Well their xbox could do that too for those that have it if it didn't require Gold Live membership to do streaming.

Dude, just save yourself the hassle. The "writers" on this blog are just as bad as half its readers.

I don't doubt this is going to sell like hot cakes. APPL needs to do something more.

Apple should include an AppStore for their Apple TV. I would buy one then as at the moment IMO the only reason to buy an Apple TV is that I can use Airplay mirroring with my 4S and iPad 3 but that isn't really enough for me to buy into it. Apple needs to either drop (by which I mean completely cut off) it's Apple TV or step up and make it more than just a hobby. Make it something interesting and that could actually potentially sell in the same way that their iPads are selling in the tablet industry (Apple are the number one in the tablet market incase any Fandroids need reminding) since as far as I know there is no real definitive market leader in the set-top box market...

That is undeniably true... BUT let me tell you that, although being a happy owner of MacBook, iPhone4S, iPhone5, I just sold my iPad (the new one, not the new new one) because after buying a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, with the latest Android 4.1.2 WITH FLASH, two days after i got my Galaxy Tab modded... Quite simply, there's a lot more you can do with it. No doubt about it.
